BIKEABILITY

Every year our Primary 5 and 6 pupils participate in a cycling proficiency programme which aims to help pupils to cycle safely when on the road.

Class teachers lead the theory element of Cycling Proficiency Training and we are very grateful to parental volunteers and school assistants who help to lead the practical side of the training alongside the teachers. It is a real team effort!

The pupils learn to carry-out safety checks on their bikes before setting off for a journey. We also stress the importance of wearing a helmet. At the end of the training, the pupils receive a certificate which reflects the skill level reached.

Our Early Years Centre children are also keen to improve their cycling skills and take part in ‘Play on Pedals’ activities.  Through a series of fun and imaginative activities, the children learn to develop their balance and control skills, often using a balance bike to begin with. Play on Pedals has strong links to the curriculum for excellence and is thoroughly enjoyed by both pupils and staff.
