Primary 4/3 Term 2

Here is our class update for Term 2:

We will continue to have PE on Monday afternoons. We are currently having football sessions with coaches from Ayr United. Our second PE day alternates between Tuesdays and Fridays so it is best to make sure your child’s PE kit is in school every day. Please can children bring a change of shorts/ joggers/ leggings, t-shirt and gym shoes/trainers. No jewellery should be worn.

Reading and spelling homework will continue to be given out on a Monday and should be completed for a Friday. Please sign your child’s reading record each week and ensure their homework folder is returned to school. Some weeks spelling homework will be set online on Sumdog. Children have their logins in their reading record or posted on Learning Journals if their reading record has not been returned to school.  Children can also use this login for Sumdog maths for extra practice.

Term 2 is always a busy one and so far we have been learning about Bonfire Night, Remembrance day and we had fun on Halloween and Children in Need. In RME we learned about Diwali and our topic in December will be Christmas Around the World. Children have also started making some lovely crafts to sell at our Christmas Fair.

We are also celebrating Book Week Scotland. Primary 3 children will receive a book bag and will be taking part in fun reading activities with Primary 7/6 children.

Staff have been taking part in digital technology training and the children have got to work on their programming and coding skills this term through using Microbits, Indi Sphero cars and we also borrowed Marty the Robot from the Digital Lending Library.

Our Talk for Writing text this term is a recount called Jungle Walk. We used drama activities to start to learn the descriptive language used in the text. Some children will be working on using digital technology to help with their story writing.

In maths we have been working on strategies to help us with addition and subtraction. We will be moving on to multiplication and division soon. Mrs Connelly teaches us about Time on a Thursday and Mrs Parker has been doing some problem solving activities with us.

We are continuing our castles topic and in Science we are learning about sound. We have learned about pitch and volume and will soon be looking at the sounds different musical instruments can make and we will even be making our own instruments! Soon we will have our own class band!

You can see your child participating in some of the activities mentioned above by checking their Learning Journal.

P7/6 Term 2 Update

Welcome back to our P7/6 blog! We’ve had a busy and exciting Term 2.

Our main literacy focus this term has been persuasive writing. We have been learning how to:

  • Use strong points and evidence

  • Include persuasive language and rhetorical questions

  • Structure our writing clearly

  • Share our opinions confidently and respectfully

We’ve enjoyed choosing topics we care about and learning how to write pieces that inform, convince, and persuade.

In maths, we have been working on time and money. We have been learning to:

  • Read and calculate using both 12-hour and 24-hour clocks

  • Work out time durations

  • Use real-life money skills such as budgeting, estimating costs, and calculating change

We’ve also continued building our problem-solving skills through a range of challenges and practical tasks.

This term, our Health and Wellbeing focus has been online safety and bullying. We have been learning how to keep ourselves safe when using the internet, how to recognise unsafe or unkind behaviour online, and what to do if we or others are affected. We also explored what bullying looks like, how it impacts people, and how we can all play a role in creating a respectful, supportive classroom community.

In P.E., we’ve continued developing our skills as young leaders by working on our Junior Coaching Award with Caitlin from Active Schools. We’ve been practising how to organise activities, explain rules clearly, and support younger pupils.

Our science topic this term has been Light and Fireworks. We’ve explored:

  • How light travels

  • The properties of shadows

  • How colours are made

  • The science behind fireworks and why we see different colours and patterns

It has been a bright and exciting topic with lots of opportunities for investigation.

We have continued our Titanic topic in Social Studies. This term, we deepened our understanding of:

  • The passengers, crew, and different experiences on board

  • The events of the sinking

  • Morse Code and early communication

  • How the disaster led to important safety changes

A highlight was our school trip to the Maritime Museum in Irvine, where we took part in workshops, and learned even more about life at sea. It was a fantastic experience that helped bring our learning to life.
