Home Learning Ideas
Learning opportunities come in all shapes and sizes and from a wide range of sources – we don’t have to be in the class with a teacher to achieve. Families are the first educators of children and have a wealth of skills and knowledge to share. All opportunities are learning opportunities. A period of self-isolation is the perfect time to Play, Learn and Grow together.
Wider Achievement
Youth Scotland are running a campaign offering materials for parents and carers to help their children to gain qualifications at home . Hi-5 and Dynamic Youth awards offer a fun, home-based way to learn and earn accreditation for ages 5+ and 10+.
Youth Awards like Hi5 and DYA are a great way of recognising children and young people’s personal achievements which is a key part of Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence. Recognising personal achievements can have a really positive effect on young people’s confidence and motivation and help them connect experiences at home or in their community with all aspects of their school learning.

Play
At school, our pupils are encouraged to be inquisitive, curious and explore the world around them at all stages. We know children need play to thrive and make sense of their world, and that play supports their mental and physical health and wellbeing. Play Scotland have created this pack in order to support children and families to stimulate their imagination, creativity and play time. Many ideas can be led and carried out by children themselves, with very little adult support and some are good fun for all the family! Many are suitable for indoors or confined spaces, and most are low cost or free. Play has never been more important to help children get through these difficult times but given the current pressures on families, it can be a real challenge for all of us to find time to play. The Home play pack has some great tips and ideas for helping families to fit play in to your day. Click on the image below to access the pack or have a look at the Play Scotland website for more ideas:

Outdoor Learning
If possible, getting outside is one of the best ways to take a break and relax, even if this can only be in your own garden at this time. Remember that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes! Over the last few years, our pupils have become increasingly used to taking their learning outside and exploring the environment around them come rain, wind or shine– this is always one of the aspects of the curriculum that they are most passionate about! You don’t need any special resources just dress for the weather and head to the garden.
Love Outdoor Learning Ltd – are a Scottish company who specialise in outdoor learning activities for children, within the natural environment. They are sharing their Mini Fledgling sessions for free through their Facebook page.
Each Monday, they will share a well loved story with you and then throughout the remainder of the week at 10.30am, they will provide an activity or craft to try at home or in the garden based on that story, all with minimum resources required.
So far they have explored well loved books such as ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’, ‘Three little pigs’ and this week they are doing ‘Superworm’. You can catch up with all the previous posts by searching for #MiniFledglings
Lego Challenge
If you are a lego fan and have any spare lego, duplo or similar type of building blocks at home then here is a set of challenges for you. Don’t worry if you don’t have any lego – you can use anything you have at home. The limits are your own imagination. When you have completed a challenge (and shared it with us!), why not challenge someone else at home and compare your results or even create some new Lego Challenges and share them to the school page for others in our school community.
Health & Wellbeing
Physical and Mental Health and Wellbeing are always top of our priority list, even more so during these times.
Family Member of the Day – In school everyday a pupil is chosen at random to be the Pupil of the Day – they are given special privileges and are also given compliments from their peers as well as from themselves. Music Service
Each week in school we are visited by a number of music specialists to work with our children throughout the school. They are sending us some resources and ideas of how you can keep up your connection with music whilst at home.
Try this song maker experiment: https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/
The best way is just to explore it and find out what it all does using your ears. You can adjust the tempo (speed) at the bottom, as well as changing the sounds next to the play button (bottom right).
Once you get to grips with it and have created something you like the sound of, it would be great if you could hit save, then copy the link below as a comment below. That way we should all be able to hear each others’ music!
Here’s a link to one we wrote earlier. Hope you like it 😀
