P5H Homework & Reminders – w/b 31.10.16

Good evening, I hope you have had as nice a weekend as I have after the busy week we have just had.  Yet again we have another busy week ahead of us. Keep reading for your homework and reminders.

Spelling: Please complete either se, ze for z or silent b in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. I will give you all a new spelling homework activity grid tomorrow and explain each activity to you. Please complete a different spelling activity from this grid each week.

Book Detectives:  We will be setting up our new Book Detective groups on Thursday, therefore I will post your homework on Thursday.

Personal Reading Challenge:  As we discussed in class, you should read at least 4 books, chosen by you, this term. You should now be well into your first book. Once you have completed a book, you should fill in your personal reading passport which will now be kept in class.  Please make sure you bring them into school tomorrow (Mon 31st)

Maths:  This week I have posted another set of worded problems to complete in your maths homework jotter. We have discussed how to do these questions in class. It can be a bit tricky to decide what the question is asking but we will have lots of practice this term so it should become easier as the weeks go by. We will also be practicing these types of questions in class too.

Remember practice makes perfect!

Please read the instructions carefully to ensure all aspects of the task are being completed.

Topic: Next week as part of our topic we will be looking at Bishopton and comparing it to a small town in Brazil. To prepare for this I would like you to keep a diary for a day. Choose a day this week and keep a note of your daily routine. You should consider the following:

  • What time do you get up?
  • What do you do in the morning before school?
  • What time do you leave for school?
  • How do you get there?
  • What did you do in school through the day?
  • Do you attend any clubs after school?
  • When do you have dinner?
  • What time do you go to bed?

Paper will be issued for you to complete the task on. This task should be returned to school by Monday 7th Nov.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1. P. E. is on Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure you have a full kit to change into: shorts, top and trainers. Girls, please remember to bring socks if you are wearing tights. Both our P.E. sessions are going to be energetic so please remember to have a water bottle with you.
  2. Photographs will be issued this week and are due to be returned by Thursday 10th November.
  3. The Christmas card orders have been sent out and are due to be returned by Tuesday 1st November. We have a very tight time limit for returning your cards so please remember to bring them to school.

Enjoy what’s left of the weekend.

See you in the morning.

Mrs Hughes

As always we have another busy week ahead of us. Keep reading for a rundown of your homework and reminders.

Spelling:  Unit 16 or 23 should be completed in your spelling homework jotter for Friday. Try to complete a different Creative Spelling activity from last week.

Book Detectives:  Please click the link below to see your Book Detectives homework which should be completed for Thursday.  Please remember if you do not complete the task, you will be unable to participate in the class lesson.

Personal Reading Challenge:  As discussed in class, you should read at least 4 extra books this term. You should now be well into your first book. I know that some  people are now onto their second book. Fabulous! Once you have completed a book, you should fill in your reading record which is being kept in class.

Maths:  This week you have another set of worded problems to complete in your maths homework jotter. Last week in class we chatted about how to work out what type of calculation the question is asking you to do. It can be quite tricky but we will have lots of practice this term so hopefully it will become easier as the weeks go by. We will also be practicing these types of questions in class too. Remember practice makes perfect!

Please read the instructions carefully to ensure all aspects of the task are being completed. If you are unsure as to how you should layout your work, please look at the post for “Examples of Good Work”.

P5S – Brazil – Fact File Task

Image result for brazil flag

This term our writing focus is fact files so we kicked off our Brazil topic with a research task which would allow us to find out lots of information that we could then transfer into a fact file of our own. Each group member had to create an interesting and colourful fact file which included the following information:

  • national flag, coat of arms, bird, animal, flower
  • population, currency, religion, capital, main cities
  • landscape, areas of water (oceans/seas), climate
  • tourist attractions (landmarks)
  • national anthem
  • festivals, carnivals
  • any other important information

How did you do? Did you manage to research and take notes on all of these areas?

Our social skill for this task was:  Helping/Encouraging each other: I can encourage and help my group members to complete an individual task for my group.

This meant that if someone in your group did not have any notes on a particular area, and you did, you were to help one another by sharing your information. This ensured that the group aspect of the task was fulfilled. How did your group do at this part of the task? Did you help and encourage one another?

The completed fact files were then peer assessed by another group. Will they have the same assessment results as your group? All your fact files and your peer assessment results are now on your wall space.

P1 Homework w/b 31.10.16

Hi

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend and have enjoyed all of the kids Halloween parties that I was hearing about in class.

Here is some key information for the week ahead:

HALLOWEEN PARTY

We will be having a small Halloween party on Monday afternoon. Could all children please come to school wearing their school uniform and bring their costume in a bag to change into after lunch. If your child prefers not to wear a costume they can just wear party clothes. All children will go home wearing their costumes unless you let me know otherwise.

TRIP

All P1 pupils will be joining P1F and visiting Scotland Street School on Tuesday. Mrs Ferguson will be in charge of the children for this trip. Children will be leaving school about 12 o’clock and will be back for home time. Please remember to send your child in with a packed lunch. I will organise school lunches the children who have chosen this option. If you have not already sent in your permission slip for this trip, please send in no later than tomorrow!

LIBRARY

We will be visiting the library again shortly to return our books and choose new ones. Once the date is finalised, I will let you know.

READ AND MUNCH

Please note that our Read and Munch day will continue to be on a Thursday. Please send any text into school for children to read for enjoyment and a healthy snack (fruit or vegetable) that they can eat whilst reading on this day.

Here is the P1 homework for this week:

Reading – 2 books that will be swapped on Wednesday.

No new sounds – Please revise all sounds to date. Continue to create words using these sounds and encourage children to blend the sounds together to read the words.

Wordwall – Please practise the dotted words every night. If your child can say the word fluently, without hesitating or having to sound it out, then it can get a tick. After 3 ticks, you no longer have to focus on that word. I will only highlight the words in green when I can see that your child is fully confident in reading the word. Please also ensure that you are asking the words in a different order every time to stop children from just memorising them.

Maths Challenges – Please feel free to complete the relevant activity on any day of the week that suits you best.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or queries.

Miss Cruickshank

P2 Homework w/b 31.10.16

Hi P2

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed all of your Halloween parties that you were  telling me about.

KEY INFORMATION FOR THIS WEEK:

Halloween Party

We will be having a small Halloween party on Monday afternoon. Could all children please come to school wearing their school uniform and bring their costume in a bag to change into after lunch. If your child prefers not to wear a costume they can just wear party clothes. All children will go home wearing their costumes unless you let me know otherwise.

Library

We will be visiting the library again shortly to return our books and choose new ones. Once the date is finalised, I will let you know.

HOMEWORK

All P2 homework will now be issued on a Monday and will be due on the Friday. This is to allow more flexibility at home to tie in with extra curricular activities and family commitments.

Please note however that the day in which reading books are sent home may vary!

I will also be encouraging the children to begin to become more independent and take responsibility for organising the content of their book bags. This means that I will not be checking the book bags on a daily basis for notes or letters and instead will encourage all children to hand me anything that is meant for my attention. To help with this, please let your child know if there is anything in their book bags that they need to give to me.

Please also note that all homework will now be marked on a Friday!

Homework for this week:

Spelling : Common Words.

Instead of coming up with new words this week, try one of the active spelling activities from the sheet that I am sending home tomorrow. (Please note that this sheet contains some ideas to help support children when learning and practising their spelling words. Please use it throughout the year as you wish.)

I will also  be sending home a blank ‘spelling wall’ this week which children can use at home and in school to build up a bank of words that they need to practise.

Reading– We are continuing to read non-fiction books this week and all new texts will be sent home on Tuesday! Please assist your child with any tricky words and talk about the different features of the text (e.g. photographs, captions, subtitles, contents etc.)

Maths – Days of the Week cut and stick sheet.

Wordwalls – New wordwalls will be sent home on Tuesday. Please focus only on the words that are dotted. You may tick the dotted words when your child can read the word without having to sound it out. I will only highlight the word in green when I know that your child is fully confident in reading a word.

Read and Munch – Our Read and Munch Day this term will continue to be on a Thursday. Please allow children to bring a text of their choice into school to read for their enjoyment and also a healthy snack (fruit or vegetable) that they can eat whilst reading on this day.

Personal Talk –As part of our new Toys Topic, P2 pupils will be asked to give a small talk to the class about their favourite toys.  Letters with  more detail will be given out on Monday.

Trip –Our school trip to Scotland Street Museum is on the 8th of November.  If you haven’t returned the letter for permission please do so as soon as possible.  Thank you.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or queries.

P5S – Proper Nouns Practice

Image result for pencil

Our grammar lesson today had us working hard on ensuring our proper nouns started with a capital letter. You had six stations to work round and in one minute had to think of as many examples for each category as you could. The categories were: countries, towns and cities in Scotland, bodies of water (and once again, neither Clydebank or Blackpool are bodies of water), states in America, music artists and any other types of proper nouns.

Most of you remembered to include a capital letter at the beginning of your example. Some of you still have a little work to do but we will continue to work hard on this.

Have a look at the completed sheets at the end of the photographs. Can you spot your examples? Look for your initials and show them to someone at home.

P5S – Time for Triangles

Image result for isosceles triangle

Today we continued with our Shape topic and learned all about the different types of triangles and their properties. To help with your understanding  we played a sorting game where you had to look at the properties of different types of triangles and display them under the correct name. Can you remember how to spell (and pronounce) the names? They were rather tricky! Can you tell someone the name of the triangle above?

Next you all became detectives and had to solve a couple of crimes. You had to use your knowledge of the properties of each style of triangle and try to work out who the culprit was and send them to jail.

Before heading out for break, everyone had to complete an exit pass and tell me the names of all of the triangles and the properties of at least one of them. I did have a chuckle at some of the spelling! Guess what words we will be practicing next week.

Here are a few photographs from today’s lesson.

P5S – Maths is Fun!

Image result for d10 dice

This week we have been learning to add and subtract using 3-digits. This has meant we have had to “carry” and “borrow” which can be quite tricky.  We have had lots of practice and even completed a few class quizzes where we got full marks. Well done!

Yesterday in our maths pairs, we used a 10-sided dice to create 3-digit numbers which we then added or subtracted with great results. Who would have thought you could have so much fun with maths?

Have a wee nosey at our task.

wk beginning 31/10/16

Please remember our Hallowe’en party on Monday afternoon – bring a costume or play clothes to change in to.

Please remember our trip on Tuesday – bring a packed lunch.

Homework this week – 2 books, no new sounds, wordwall, maths (any night that suits you)

Library visits

We will be going back to Bishopton library to swap our books and we have a special visit to the library with our buddies.  If you are available to help on these days, please put a note in your child’s homework diary (grandparents welcome too).

P5S – Book Detectives

Image result for reading books cartoon

Today you were put into your new groups and issued with your new reading books. As discussed in class, you will read a set amount of pages per week. Please see below for the pages to be read by each group this week.

Blue:   Billy’s Luck – Please read chapters 1-2: pages 3-23 inclusive.

Red:     Dads Win Prizes – Please read chapters 1-5: pages 3-27 inclusive.

Yellow:   Front Page Story – Please read chapters 1-3: pages 3-27 inclusive

Green:   Tomb Raiders – Please read chapters 1-3: pages 4-33 inclusive.

Once you have completed the reading each week you should then complete two segments using the information from the chapters read: Question Master and Illustrator.  A short section from the book should also be chosen to read aloud to your group members.

We have gone over the types of questions you should be coming up with this week: literal (the answer is found directly in the text). Please come up with 5 questions which can be shared with your group members during our next session. You must also have detailed answers for each of your questions.

You should also completed a detailed illustration of an interesting part of the story so far. A short, written explanation should also be included. This task should be completed in your Book Detectives jotter.

Please remember that you will be unable to participate in our class lesson if you do not complete this task.

P7M Badminton Tournament

This morning we finally managed to finish our Badminton topic in P.E. with a smashing doubles tournament. You chose a partner and we played 2.5 minute games in a knock out competition. While your peers watched on they had three people to assess looking for correct handgrip, serving, different types of shots (short, long and smash), communication with partner and movement around the court.

P1H Bits and Pieces!

Please remember that we are having photographs taken tomorrow and Friday.  Children should wear white shirt and tie.  I have a note of those who wish sweatshirts left on or taken off.

Our Read and Munch will be on Friday this week due to photographs.  Please remember to bring a book and a healthy snack.

We will be visiting the library on the morning of Tuesday November 8th and will be looking for some parent helpers to walk with us to and from the library.  Please put a note in your child’s diary if you are available from 9.30-11am.  This will be a regular trip so we will be looking for helpers on more than one occasion.

We are going on a trip to Scotland Street School on November 23rd and will again be looking for helpers to come with us – it will be in the afternoon from 11.45am until end of school.  Please let me know if you are available.

Best wishes.

P5H Brazilian Home Team Challenge

Image result for brazil

On Monday we started our new topic on Brazil with a research task in the IT Suite. Each new group had to research a number of aspects that related to Brazil. You all had to take suitable notes, using headings and bullet points and you then were to use these to decide on a group name. Please share some interesting facts with someone at home.

Learning Outcome: I can create an interesting group name which is linked to Brazil.

The skills you used were:

Skill for Learning – Synthesis: I can list my research under suitable headings. I can use this information to help my group choose a suitable group name

Social Skill: As a group we can reach an agreement in the correct manner.

I was impressed at how well some of our new groups worked on their first task together. I heard some fantastic ideas being shared, and the task was divided up well with nearly everyone doing their part to make the task a success.

Well done!

Here are some photographs of our new Brazilian groups working on their Home Team Challenge.
