P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 16.1.17
Good afternoon everyone, I hope you are enjoying your weekend after the very busy week we’ve had. I hope you are looking forward to next week. Please keep reading for your homework and reminders.
Spelling: Please complete list u for ue or le in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. Please continue to write out your spelling words 3 times using SaCaWaC which I have explained to you in class. You should then write a sentence for each of your spelling rule words concentrating on using interesting VCOP – vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation.
Reading: This term we will be completing a novel study – Danny the Champion of the World. As discussed in class there is no formal written homework to be completed for this. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson. Please read chapters 5 and 6 for Tuesday 24th Jan.
If you find any vocabulary that you are unsure of its meaning, please use a dictionary to find out. Also take a note of it in your Book Detectives jotter, remembering to take a note of the page number, and we will discuss it in class.
Personal Reading Challenge: As discussed in class this challenge will be ongoing for the whole of this term. You now have 11 weeks of reading left. You have all set yourself a personal target based on the number of books you read last term. Your aim is now to reach that target or beat it! Remember it is the quality of the books you read that is important. Please choose carefully to ensure the books you are reading are at the correct level for you – not too easy or too hard. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC time.
Please remember to record the books in your reading passport when you start a new book and complete your review when you finish it. Your passports are kept in class.
Maths: This week Mrs. O’Neill has posted another set of worded problems on your maths homework blog. Please complete these in your maths homework jotter. As always, please read each question carefully. You should ensure you are showing workings AND giving a full sentence answer. This homework is due for Thursday. All jotters should now be covered.
A high standard of work is being produced from most of you. Well done! Keep it up!
Both group 1 and group 2 can find their maths homework here:
Please remember to access the Multiplication and Division Trainer for extra practice. You can access it using the links below. Also remember we are continuing with our Table Challenge, we are going for green!

Topic: Part of our mini Scotland topic was to choose a Scottish poem to learn. You will perform your poem to the class and another stage within the school. We will then have a class winner who will represent our class at our annual Burns’ Assembly at the end of January.
Almost everyone has chosen their poem and you should now be practicing for our recital. Please click here to see the areas you will be judged on.
Here are your reminders for this week:
- P.E. is on Tuesday and Thursday. If you have not already done so, please ensure you have a P.E. kit in school. Please remember to have a bottle of water with you for both sessions.
- If you haven’t already done so, please remember to cover all your homework jotters.
- If possible please remember to bring in an old shirt or tee-shirt which is big enough to cover your uniform during any art activities. Also any old newspapers would be great for covering your desks.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you tomorrow.

- At the weekend Kieran and Mikey ordered 7 extra large pizzas (they were very hungry). The total cost was £147. How much did it cost for each pizza?
- Heather needs at least 2000 points to move up a level on her favourite Xbox game. She only has 1254 points at the moment. How many more points does Heather need to qualify for the next level?
- Innis enjoys baking with her sister Eve. They go to the Co-op to buy ingredients for a cake. The flour cost 80p, the eggs £1.20, the butter £1.25 and the milk 99p. How much was the total cost for all of the ingredients? How much change did they receive from £10.00?
- Challenge question Luca enjoys going for long walks with his puppy, Dash. On Saturday he decided to walk from his house in Bishopton, across the Erskine Bridge and back again. If this is a distance of 6 miles (one way), how many miles will he have walked in total if he does the same walk again on Sunday?

Blending booklet – this week we start our blending booklet. This week we are working on 3 letter words with a in the middle. We will be practising these words in class and ask that you practise at home too. You can make the words with the sound cards and help your child to blend the sounds together.

P5S – Science Centre Visit
Today we visited the Science Centre for the launch of our Clyde in the Classroom project. We learned how to look after the hatchery and the eggs once they arrive in school. You will be sharing this information with P5H next week. Both classes have a very exciting time ahead.
We were very lucky to have a little free time before the presentations and had the opportunity to visit the different exhibitions. You certainly seemed to have a lot of fun. Please tell someone at home about some of the different experiments you took part in.
P5S – Burns Artwork
This week you had a group art activity to complete for our Scotland topic and it was all about the teamwork. The task involved each group member working together to draw different sections of a picture of Robert Burns’ head (just like the one above).
First you had to check you all had your paper positioned the same way. Did you? Next you had to ensure the drawing was drawn to scale. You also had to check with your group members to make sure each part of Burns’ face matched up. How many of you did this regularly?
Here are a few photographs of you working on this task.
Here are the completed drawings. They certainly are unique! Show someone at home the section (s) you completed for your group. Let me know what they think.
P5S – Robert Burns’ Research Task Posters
Yesterday you completed your group poster on The Life of …… Robert Burns. For this task you each had to research different aspects of Robert Burns’ life and then display your information in a creative way. How did you do? Were you creative? Did you include lots of interesting information?
Show someone at home your completed poster. Let me know what they think.

P1F – Evaluating Dips
Today, P1F started a new food technology topic. This term, we will be learning all about different kinds of dips and dippers and testing some out. We will try to explain what we like, or dislike, about them.
The first lesson involved trying 4 different dips: hummus, guacamole, salsa and sour cream and chive. I was very impressed that all of you tried all of the dips, especially when you were not too sure about them! Well done for having a try! As we discussed in class, you can’t really say you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it!
Here are some of the things you said about the different dips:
“I liked that it was red.”
“I’ve had it at my house before!”
“I really liked the taste of it.”
“I thought I wouldn’t like it but I did!”
“It tastes good!”
“I liked the brown colour.”
“The smell of the hummus was good.”
“I liked the wee green bits.”
“The colour being green was good.”
At the end of the lesson we voted on which was our favourite and made a human bar graph. The least favourite was guacamole (which is my favourite, it’s so yummy!) and the one with the most votes was sour cream and chives.
I hope you enjoyed telling everyone at home about all the delicious dips you tried today and will give them another try if you get the chance. Next week we will be trying out different kinds of dippers and seeing if we can describe them.
P2/1 – Evaluating Dips

As we discussed in class, you can’t really say you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it!
Here are some of the things you said about the different dips:
“I like the one with green bits in it.”
“It wasn’t too spicy, kind of in the middle.”
“The colour was kind of brown.”
“I liked the flavour.”
“I like it on the breadstick.”
“Super-duper-duper yummy!”
“The smell of the sour cream was yummy.”
“I could keep on eating it!”
“I liked it because I like ketchup.”
“I like the wee green bits.”

P7M National Sumdog Contest
Sumdog’s January National Maths Contest is almost here! It starts tomorrow (Friday 13th) at 8am, and finishes at 8pm on Thursday 19th January.
Here are some things to keep in mind during the contest:
- You can play at any time.
- For the score to count, the January National Maths Contest activity must be showing in the green panel on the left of the screen when you click to start each game.
- Your scores are based on correct answers.
- A class’s score is the average of the scores from all pupils from that class who take part.
- To appear on the leaderboard, at least 10 pupils from a class need to play.
- As some pupils have limited computer access, every pupil is limited to 1000 contest questions. However, your logins let them keep playing other activities afterwards.
This will be our Maths Homework for next week, however please feel free to start playing from tomorrow. Good luck!
P3/2 P2/1 P2H Scottish Poems
In January, in Bishopton Primary, we focus on Scottish culture with classes learning about Robert Burns. We also ask pupils to learn Scottish poems for our Burns Poem competition. This week your child received their selection of poems. They should choose 1 to learn for Monday 23rd January. Each child will be asked to recite their poem in front of their class. If they wish to be put forward for the school poetry competition they can go round different classes where a class winner will be chosen. This winner is then put forward for our whole school assembly competition on Friday 27th January where an overall winner will be chosen for P1-3, P4 and P5, and P5-7.
Here are some points to consider:
- Pupils should try to learn their poem so they can recite it without the paper.
- A clear voice should be used.
- Good eye contact with the audience.
- Children should have an understanding of the poem.
- Correct pronunciation of Scottish words.
- Good facial and vocal expression.
- A moderate amount of appropriate gesture if it comes naturally.
- Pupils should recite the poem rather than singing.
We can’t wait to hear all of these poems.
Thank you for all of your continued support.

I was very impressed at how many of you tried all of the dips, especially when you were not too sure about them! Well done for having a try! As we discussed in class, you can’t really say you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it!
Unfortunately we were so busy trying our dips that I forgot to take any photos. However, here are some of the things you said about the different dips:
“This one is yummy!”
“I tried it even though it looked weird.”
“I liked that one but I wasn’t sure before!”
“It’s nice, it makes your tongue go all burny.”
“I liked it cause it smells nice.”
“I got it without any green bits!”
“Sour cream is my favourite! I want to use all my breadsticks for it.”
“My tummy is all happy.”
“I liked the fancy tomato sauce.”
At the end of the lesson we voted on which was our favourite. Miss Mackay is going to use that information in class to create a graph. The least favourite was guacamole (which is my favourite, it’s so yummy!) and the one with the most votes was salsa.
I hope you enjoyed telling everyone at home about all the delicious dips you tried today and will give them another try if you get the chance. Next week we will be trying out different kinds of dippers and seeing if we can describe them.
Scottish Culture Month
Hi There
It is Scottish Culture month in January within the school! As part of this each child is asked to select and learn a Burns poem which they will then recite to the class.
From this, a child from each class will be selected to represent their class at our Burns assembly.
When learning the poem pupils have to focus on –
- Good, clear diction
- Pace
- A good understanding of the poem
- Correct pronunciation of Scottish words
- Good facial and vocal expressions conveying the sentiment of the poem
- Variation in pace and tone
As a class we picked four to focus on, however feel free to choose your own if you want! The four we picked were:
A Red, Red Rose
My Heart is in the Highlands
Scots Wae Hae
Up in the Morning Early
Have fun learning your poems and we look forward to hearing them!
