P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 6.2,17

Good morning everyone, I hope you are enjoying your weekend.  This week is a short week for you due to the mid term break. Please continue reading for your homework and reminders.

Spelling: Please complete lists y for ie or er in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. Please continue to write out your spelling words 3 times using SaCaWaC in the same way as we do in class. You should then write a sentence for each of your first 6 spelling words. We are again concentrating on the V of VCOP – vocabulary this week. You should be trying to have at least one wow word in each sentence (many of you should be aiming for more). I will again be focusing on assessing your fabulous vocabulary.

Reading: We are continuing with our novel study – Danny the Champion of the World. Please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson. Please read chapters 11 and 12 for Wednesday 15th February.

If there are words that you don’t understand please take a note of them in your Book Detectives jotter (remembering the page number) and, if possible, use a dictionary to find out their meaning . We will start our lesson by discussing them in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: Your challenge will be ongoing for the whole of this term (8 weeks left!). I have been really pleased to see so many of you recording your books in your reading passports, keep it up!!  Please choose your books carefully to ensure they are at the correct level for you – not too easy or too hard. Remember you can bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC time.

Listening & Talking: This term you have a solo presentation to complete. You have 3 weeks to plan, organise and prepare your presentation as you will be presenting in class on Tuesday 28th February. Please click here to see the task sheet with all of the details required. If you require a paper copy of the task sheet, please ask.

Maths:  There is no formal written homework this wee, however, we will be starting our fraction topic soon and it is very important that you know all your tables as this will make working with fractions much easier. Please remember to access the Multiplication and Division Trainers for extra practice.

Here are your reminders for this week:

  1. P.E. will be on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Please ensure you have a P.E. kit in school. Please also remember to  have a bottle of water with you as you will be working hard.
  2. Our mid-term break begins this weekend. You will finish on Thursday and return to school on Wednesday 15th.
  3. For those of you who haven’t already done so, please cover all your homework jotters. This helps to keep your jotters in good condition.
  4. Please remember to bring in an old shirt or tee-shirt which is big enough to cover your uniform during our art activities (we will be working on some artwork this week). This can be left in school until the end of term/session if you wish.  Also any old newspapers would be great for covering your desk.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. See you all tomorrow.

Mrs. Hughes.

Good afternoon everyone! It’s that time of the week again.  We have a short week ahead (In-service for you on Friday). Please keep reading for a rundown of your homework and reminders for the coming week.

Spelling:  List 26 or 33 should be completed for Thursday. Please copy each word out 3 times in your spelling jotter. Detailed sentences for your 6 spelling rule words should be completed also. Please remember to include ambitious VCOP. This week I will be looking for interesting vocabulary being used.

Reading:  Please read chapters 12 and 13 of our class novel: The Borrowers. There is no written homework to be completed for this as it will be done in class. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to participate in the class lesson. All reading should be completed for Wednesday 8th.

As discussed in class, if you come across any vocabulary that you are unsure of the definition, please use a dictionary to find this out. You may also take a note of it in your Book Detectives jotter (remember to take a note of the page number) and we can discuss it in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 8 weeks of reading left. You have set yourself a personal target based on the number of books read last term and the aim is to reach it (or beat it!) before the end of term. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class.

Maths: Since it is a short week this week (and to allow you to concentrate on your reading) there will be no maths homework this week.

Please remember you may access the Multiplication and Division Trainer for extra practice if you wish. You can access the links below.

P5 – Solo Presentations

Image result for talking mouth clipart

Over the next few weeks you should prepare a solo talk which you will present to the class on Tuesday 28th February. This talk can be on a topic of your choice. The criteria and task sheet for this task can be found below.

Solo Talk Presentation

Learning Outcome:  I can research a topic of my choice and create a detailed presentation.

Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select and sort information from a variety of sources and use this for different purposes. LIT 2-14a

Skill for Learning

Application & Knowledge: I can apply my knowledge of a topic of my choice, to plan and produce an interesting presentation.

 Skill for Work

I can organise my time and resources independently to ensure my presentation is completed in the allocated time.

Background

To build on your presentation skills you have to prepare a solo talk to present to your peers. Presentations play a huge part in our learning and being able to present to your peers, with confidence, is a great skill to learn.

Task

What you need to know: You are free to complete your solo talk presentation on any topic you wish. It would be best if you were to pick a topic you are interested in, or involved in already, as this way you will have personal knowledge about the subject you are talking about. For example, it could be about a sport you are involved in, a club you attend, a place you have visited. Your talk should be between 2-3 minutes in length.

What you need to do: You need to plan and prepare a talk on a topic of your choice. You may use props and/or visual aids. If you make a PowerPoint it should not be full of writing as this will ensure you are not reading directly from the slides. Photographs may be included which will help prompt you during your talk. Please choose a way you feel will best help you to demonstrate your knowledge of your chosen topic. This project is all homework based therefore you need to think about the resources you will have access to: books, library, internet, personal accounts etc.

What you need to think about: You can use whatever you need to describe your chosen topic: photographs, videos, props etc. Try to think about why you picked this topic to talk about. Remember some people in class may know nothing about the topic you have chosen to discuss, so you must explain it in detail.

How to get started: Get all of your ideas down on paper and then decide which ones are the most relevant and will best engage your audience.

Product Criteria

·         You have 3 weeks to pull your presentation together so use your time wisely. You will be presenting your information to the class on Tuesday 28th February 2017.

·         This is an independent research project. It is your responsibility to organise your time effectively and ensure you are putting in enough effort.

·         Everyone will approach this task in different ways so don’t worry if your friends are doing something different from you. Have faith in what you have to say and it will all work out.

·         This is your chance to show just how well you can take responsibility for your own learning.

Happy researching!

P7 Visit to Scotland Street – WW2 Classroom

This afternoon, both P7 classes took a trip back in time to a 1939 classroom with Miss James. They had to change into a traditional uniform then they were lined up in a strict fashion before being instructed to their seats.

They had to recite their 2-5 times tables and then individually had to answer a question which was very nerve racking! They used a slate and chalk to answer five mental arithmetic questions (which even involved questions about shillings)!

Next they had a spelling test with the words: ration, siren, shelter, evacuation and coupon. After that, came the messy part when they had to use a fountain pen and ink. They copied the words from the chalkboard using cursive handwriting and used blotting paper to soak up the excess ink. Finally they wrote a label with their name, address, school and date of birth in case they had to be evacuated.

During the lesson, the pupils had to sit with their spines against the back of the chair, feet flat on the floor and ‘faces forward’. Miss James was a force to be reckoned with, without even using her belt! When Miss James came out of character, she explained that this was how pupils would have been taught and felt in 1939. Schools and teaching methods have changed so much since then. Tell someone at home what you enjoyed about the school experience and something you appreciate about how your school experience is today.

Gymnastics Stations

Today we had great fun working our way around different gymnastics stations. We practised gymnastics moves that we had learned such as balances, jumps, rolls and some children even attempted flips! We were all very confident and challenged ourselves to try new things! Well done everyone!

P5 The River Clyde – Mapping Task

Today we will be working on our second task for our River Clyde topic. By now each group should have researched a number of well known landmarks found on the River Clyde including where these landmarks are located. You are now going to use this information plus the links below to complete your maps.

As always you have a task sheet to guide you. Please follow the directions on your task sheet closely to ensure you cover all of the areas required.

The details of the learning outcomes and skills we are focusing on today can be found on your task sheet as well as your success criteria..

Only the links below should be used during this task.

Today we had another German Masterclass with Vincent. Once again, Vincent introduced you to the work of Paul Klee. Klee was a Swiss-German artist who used different media to create his paintings: oil paint, watercolour ink, pastels and etchings.

Today we used oil pastels to recreate one of his designs. Next week you will be adding watercolours to the background to complete them. You worked very quickly today so next week we will be able to move onto another style of art.

Here are a few photographs from this afternoon.

Creative Construction Masterclass

This afternoon in the Creative Construction Masterclass we had to  build a new creature.  What wild imaginations you all have!

Learning Outcomes:

Through discovery and imagination, I can develop and use problem-solving strategies to construct models. TCH 2-14a

Having evaluated my work, I can adapt and improve, where appropriate, through trial and error or by using feedback. TCH 2-14b

You must work with others to create an imaginary being.

Success Criteria

The model must:

  • Have a ‘head’ (of some description)
  • Have some kind of limbs
  • Be creative (think outside of the box)

P5 – The River Clyde

This term our topic is the River Clyde. We are looking at many aspects of the River Clyde. One in particular is the shipbuilding industry as this has played a major role within our local communities over the years.

We were hoping that someone at home, may it be mum, dad or even grandparents, has (or still is) played a part in this industry in some way and would be willing to come in and talk to us about it.

If you are able to help us, please leave a post on our blog or put a note in your child’s diary.

Thanking you in advance.
