Good afternoon everyone! I hope you have been having a restful week after our busy week last week. As always we have lots to do in the coming week too. Keep reading for your homework and reminders for the week ahead.

Spelling: Units 24 and 31 should be completed this week. Our spelling will be changing slightly this term. I will go over these changes with you in class tomorrow.

You should continue to copy each word out three times in your spelling jotter. You should then write an uplevelled sentence (remembering to use interesting VCOP) for the six spelling rule words. This task should be completed by Friday.

Reading:  Please read chapters 5 and 6 of our class novel: The Borrowers. As discussed in class, there is no written homework to be completed for this as it will be done in class. However, please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to participate in the class lesson. All reading should be completed for Thursday.

As discussed in class, if you come across any vocabulary that you are unsure of the definition, please use a dictionary to find this out. You may also take a note of it in your Book Detectives jotter (remember to take a note of the page number) and we can discuss it in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: This challenge will be ongoing for the whole term. We now have 11 weeks of reading left. You have set yourself a personal target based on the number of books read last term and the aim is to reach it (or beat it!) before the end of term. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class.

Maths: Please click the link below for your maths homework. This task should be completed in your maths homework jotter.  You should return this task by Friday. All jotters should now be covered.

Topic:  As part of our mini Scotland topic you must choose a Scottish poem to learn. You will then perform your poem to the class and another stage within the school. We will then have a class winner who will represent our class at our annual Burns’ Assembly at the end of January.

All poems should now be chosen and practicing for our recital should now be taking place. Please click here to see the areas you will be judges on.

  1. P.E. is on Tuesday and Friday. If you have not already done so, please ensure you have a P.E. kit in school. For Tuesday’s session please ensure you have a bottle of water. Please bring in a towel for our next yoga session on Friday.
  2. On Tuesday we will have another visit to the library to return and choose books. If you have your own library card, you may bring this to take books out on.
  3. We now have enough plastic bottles for our hatchery. I came home on Friday to find 4 that Declan was saving in his room! Thank you to those of you who managed to save some for me.

See you all tomorrow.

P5S – Science Centre Visit

Today we visited the Science Centre for the launch of our Clyde in the Classroom project. We learned how to look after the hatchery and the eggs once they arrive in school. You will be sharing this information with P5H next week. Both classes have a very exciting time ahead.

We were very lucky to have a little free time before the presentations and had the opportunity to visit the different exhibitions. You certainly seemed to have a lot of fun. Please tell someone at home about some of the different experiments you took part in.

P5S – Burns Artwork

This week you had a group art activity to complete for our Scotland topic and it was all about the teamwork. The task involved each group member working together to draw different sections of a picture of Robert Burns’ head (just like the one above).

First you had to check you all had your paper positioned the same way. Did you? Next you had to ensure the drawing was drawn to scale. You also had to check with your group members to make sure each part of Burns’ face matched up. How many of you did this regularly?

Here are a few photographs of you working on this task.

Here are the completed drawings. They certainly are unique! Show someone at home the section (s) you completed for your group. Let me know what they think.

P5 – Scottish Country Dancing

Image result for scotland flag

As part of our Scotland topic this month we will be participating in  some Scottish Country Dancing. This morning we had a few grumbles from some of you (in both classes) who weren’t particularly keen to take part. However once our session was over this afternoon many of you told us just how much you enjoyed it. We had lots of “fists of fives” being shown! Plus, we had lots and lots of smiling going on. The photographs don’t lie!

Today we were focusing on two dances: the Gay Gordons and the Canadian Barn Dance. We had a wee taster of the Gay Gordons during term 1 and I am delighted at just how many of you remembered the steps. You have well and truly mastered this dance.  Well done!

In our Canadian Barn Dance we moved it up a notch and moved partners once we had mastered the basic steps. Once again, a huge well done as you managed this very well. Next week we will move onto some of the group dances – be ready!

Here are a few action shots for you to look at.

P5S – Robert Burns – The Life of …..

Today we were researching the life of Robert Burns as part of our mini Scotland topic. Groups members researched different aspects of Burns’ life and recorded some very good information. This information was then shared with everyone in the group. Can you tell someone at home something you learned today?

Using your notes, you were then to think out of the box a little and create a poster showing all of your newfound knowledge on Robert Burns. We have some very interesting pieces being created. I look forward to showing them off once completed.

Here you all are hard at work, both in the ICT Suite and back in class.

P5S – Yoga Taster Session

Image result for yoga

On Friday you were introduced to the wonders of yoga. Yoga enhances physical flexibility, builds on your balance and coordination and also develops your focus and concentration. Over the next few weeks you will be learning about the different moves used in yoga in more detail. This will hopefully allow you to develop and build on all of these areas.

Here are a few photographs from our first taster session.

P5 – Robert Burns Research Task

Image result for robert burns

As part of our mini Scotland topic we will be researching the life of Robert Burns. In your groups you should decide who will be researching which aspect of Burns’ life. All notes will then be shared between group members. Please keep referring to your task sheet to ensure you are meeting the success criteria of the task.

Below you will find links to access to find the relevant information. You may also use the information books we have in class.

P5S – Robert Burns/Scottish Poems

As part of our mini Scotland topic you should choose a poem to learn and recite to the class. You may be the lucky person who then represents our class at our annual Burns’ Assembly on Friday 27th January.

When presenting your poem you will be judged on the following:

  • Good, clear diction
  • Pace
  • A good understanding of the poem
  • Correct pronunciation of Scottish words
  • Good facial and vocal expression conveying the sentiment of the poem
  • Variation in pace and tone
  • A moderate amount of appropriate gesture if it comes naturally and if it enhances the poem
  • Over-dramatisation should be avoided as this distracts the audience and detracts from the flow of words

Please use the links below to see a selection of poems to choose from if you wish. As discussed, if you have another poem you wish to learn instead, please let me know. There is also a link for poems by Robert Burns if you wish to learn one of these. All poem choices should be made by Friday.

P5S – The River Clyde Home Team Challenge

Image result for the river clyde

This term our main topic will be the River Clyde which we will learn about along side our Clyde in the Classroom topic.  I am really looking forward to combining these two topics this term. We have lots to learn!

Today we formed our new topic groups using our Talking Chips cards. We then shared our combined knowledge on these topics and what we would like to to learn using our KWL grid.

Our next task was to complete our Home Team Challenge by choosing a group name and design to go with it. I have to say, we have some very interesting group name choices this term! The skills and qualities you will bring to your new group were also shared.

Here are a few photographs from this today’s session.

I have been looking through your reading passports and I am very impressed at just how much many of you read last term. As I am keen to keep this enthusiasm going, we will be completing another challenge this term. I have changed the criteria slightly which I will go it with you in class tomorrow.

Christmas Jumper Day Update

On Friday we held our annual Christmas Jumper Day to help raise money for the Save the Children organisation.  Everyone wore their Christmas jumpers or t-shirts to school …… and what a wonderful selection we had!

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated on Friday. As a school we raised the fabulous total of £419.12. We were then able to increase this total after we received a “Charity Match” donation from Renfrewshire Council. This meant the final total raised was a staggering …….. £618.12.

Here are a few class photographs taken by the pupils of P5S. We don’t have any of the infants as they were busy partying and having a visit from a certain someone in a red suit.

P5S – Brazil – Food Glorious Food

Image result for brazilian flag

What a great time we had this morning preparing, cooking and tasting our Brazilian dishes. I am absolutely delighted you enjoyed it so much.

Our class had the complicated task of preparing the tapiocas. I had prepared the clay -like  paste at home to make it a little easier to work with this morning. Can you explain to someone at home how the mixture started out?  Most of you had the chance to sieve the clay to make the mixture ready for cooking. It was quite hard work for some of you!  The tapiocas didn’t take too long to cook and you were soon tucking into them. They went down a treat! Tell someone at home how the mixture reacted to the heat from the stove.

You also had to prepare and cut up the mangoes. Again this was done very well and we had lots and lots to eat. This was the first time some of you had tasted mango and it was liked by all. Maybe you can try some at home too.

Chloe S and Innis were our photographers today and took many, many photographs. Please have a wee nosey at them.

P5 – Brazilian Food Recipes

This morning we had a fun-filled time preparing, cooking and tasting some Brazilian dishes. I am so pleased you enjoyed them so much that you wanted to try the dishes at home.

Please find below the links for both recipes. The main ingredients can be bought in a number of places however I purchased them in Holland & Barrett.  I have included the link for the tapioca flour and the recipe of how to make  them. There is a lot of preparation for the tapioca however, as you tasted today, they are well worth the effort. You may also wish to try the non-gluten free version. The recipe is just the same.

This will be a non-uniform day.

Good evening everyone! I hope you are having a great weekend. Here is your homework and reminders for this week.

P5S – Hour of Code

Image result for hour of code

This morning we took part in the Hour of Code programme. Before we started we watched a video telling us just how important the world of coding is. Can you tell someone at home all about it? You could even show them the video. Click the link below if you want to watch the video again.

Coding Video

Once we watched our introductory video it was time to take part in some Star Wars themed coding. What fun everyone had …… even at the tricky parts! We found that we had to read the instructions very carefully to ensure we used the correct code for each level or it wouldn’t work properly. Even I had a wee go with some of you and managed it!

Have a look at our photographs from today’s session.
