BGE Home Economics S1-3

S1 and S2

Pupils come to Home Economics once a week in S1.  The course is divided into two different topics, Practical Cookery and Fashion and Textile Technology.

In the Practical Cookery side of the course, pupils learn a variety of food preparation skills and cookery processes through a variety of cooking lessons.

Pupils also learn about hygiene and safety, healthy eating, the Eatwell Guide, Scottish dietary goals and in S2 there is a focus on specific dietary needs and Literacy and Numeracy skills.

In the Textile Technology side of the course, S1 pupils are currently making cross stitch wall hangings and learn how to use a design brief and evaluation skills.  In S2 we are making wall hangings where pupils build on the skills from S1 and progress to using the sewing machines and different pieces of equipment.

S3

In S3 we are still focused on the BGE with the aims to building up to the National 4 and 5 Practical cookery courses.

Pupils come to the department 3 times a week and we aim to cook 2 of the 3 periods and really build on their practical cookery skills to cover all of the cookery processes and food preparation skills required in N4 and N5 hospitality.

The theory side builds on Hygiene and Safety, bacterial growth, food storage, specific dietary needs of different people, exploring and understanding ingredients and looking at sustainability in the food industry.
