Modern Studies at OLHS helps learners to understand the political, social, and international issues that shape the world around them. Through the study of contemporary society, learners explore how decisions are made, who has power and influence, and how individuals, groups, and governments respond to the challenges facing communities locally, nationally, and globally.

The subject encourages learners to engage critically with current affairs, consider different viewpoints, and develop informed opinions based on evidence. By examining real-world issues and events, learners gain a deeper understanding of democracy, citizenship, human rights, and the responsibilities that come with participating in society.

What Will Learners Study?

Modern Studies courses are organised around three key areas: Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom, Social Issues in the United Kingdom, and International Issues.

Learners investigate how democratic systems operate, how political decisions are made, and how citizens can influence change. They explore important social issues such as crime and the law, health inequalities, and wealth inequality, examining their causes, impacts, and possible solutions. They also study international issues through investigations of world powers and global challenges, helping them to understand the increasingly interconnected nature of the modern world.

Skills and Destinations

The skills developed through Modern Studies are highly valued by colleges, universities, and employers. Learners build confidence in researching issues, analysing information, evaluating sources, identifying bias, considering different viewpoints, and reaching balanced conclusions supported by evidence.

Modern Studies is particularly relevant to pathways such as politics, law, journalism, public service, social sciences, and international relations. However, the transferable skills and meta-skills developed through the subject are valuable in almost any future destination, as most careers require individuals to assess information, think critically, communicate effectively, and make informed decisions based on evidence.

Beyond the Classroom

Learners have opportunities to engage directly with democracy and citizenship through visits to the Scottish Parliament and UK Parliament, engagement with visiting speakers, Scottish Youth Parliament activities, voter registration initiatives, and mock elections.

Modern Studies also supports learner leadership through children’s rights initiatives linked to our Gold Rights Respecting School accreditation, helping young people put the values of participation, representation, and responsible citizenship into practice.
