Senior Football Team

The Senior Football Team have had a fantastic season.

Over the course of the year, the team have had a number of fantastic performances, including a 7-1 victory over our local rivals Greenfaulds. This year the Captain was Ryan McTurk and Vice Captain was Sean McGeachie, both of who did great jobs! Top goal scorer was Michael Quinn with 11 goals, and player of the season was tied between Sean Garey and Luke Scullion who both received 3 man of the match awards.

Well done to everyone for their participation this year.

Congratulations to our new MSYPs

Congratulations to two of our senior pupils, Jamie McDiarmid and Mark Stewart on their phenomenal success in the elections to the Scottish Youth Parliament. Both boys have been elected to serve as MSYPs, representing the interests of young people in the local area and beyond.

We wish them every success in their new role.

Our Curriculum

This will enable us to review and design our current curriculum in order to meet the needs of all our learners. Lent 2017

The Season of Lent is an important time in Our Lady’s High School. To support the work of SCIAF we are arranging a number of fundraising activities for our pupils and staff to participate in. On 17th March we hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Coffee Morning for staff and pupils and on Friday 24th March we will have a non uniform day (£1). We will also hold two fun sporting events – on 27th March we will have a 5k fun run, and on 29th March our staff – pupil football game will take place…and the staff are hoping for a better performance than they had at Christmas! RE classes are also being encouraged to undertake small activities during RE time to contribute to SCIAF’s work.

On a spiritual level, all of our young people will be offered the opportunity of Confessions during Lent, and we are very grateful to Fr McKay and our local Parish Priests for enabling this. We also have Mass Tuesday and Thursday the school, and Stations of the Cross on a Monday and Wednesday.

Fantastic Achievement in Our Lady’s High

Each February, schools are provided with up to date information on the performance of all the pupils who left at the end of the previous year. As you may have read in the media, the success of the pupils in Our Lady’s High School was fantastic. 66% of our pupils left with at least 3 awards at Higher level which is a superb achievement and is considerably above the West of Scotland average.

Well done to all our learners who left last session, and a huge thank you to all our staff and parents who supported our young people.

Primary 7 Maths Challenge

As part of the Primary Transition Programme, we were delighted to welcome two teams from each of our associated primaries to participate in our annual Primary Maths Challenge.

The primary teams from St. Andrew’s, St. Barbara’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Lucy’s, St. Margaret of Scotland and St. Mary’s were assisted by some of our S3 pupils, many of whom had taken part themselves when in P7!

After several tough rounds, stretching their mathematical brains, the winners of the coveted shield were St. Andrews, with St. Barbara’s a close second and St. Mary’s and St. Andrew’s in joint third place.

Well done to all pupils who participated with great enthusiasm!

Advanced Higher Chemistry

Dr Stephen Hendry (Royal Society of Chemistry Coordinator) from University of West Of Scotland, visited Our Lady’s High School on 15 March to discuss with S6 Chemistry pupils the importance of different types of spectroscopy and its wider applications.

The activity “Spectroscopy in a Suitcase” gave pupils the fantastic opportunity to use this high tech analysis approach not normally available in schools.

S3 History “Digging In” Field Trip

Over the past few weeks, all S3 History classes visited the ‘Digging In’ World War One exhibition in Pollok Country Park.  This field trip was in keeping with the Era of the Great War 1900-1928 unit of work.

Pupils toured a reconstructed trench to learn more about the structure of trenches, weapons used during WWI and soldiers’ uniforms and ration packs.  Each class also took part in a number of workshops including ‘Commemoration’, ‘Wounded in War’ and had the opportunity to use periscopes in the trenches.

S1 App Design Project

S1 pupils Maya McGonigle, Ciara McGrath, Kiera McLeod and Monica Pencovitch won a competition run by Strathclyde University to design a smartphone app.  Their winning app design allows users to access their contacts from another person’s mobile phone in the event of an emergency.

A team from the Computing Science Department of Strathclyde University consisting of Ruaridh Gallagher, Gillian Shanks and Dr John Devine have taken the girls’ idea forward and are developing it into a working app.

The team from Strathclyde University came to Our Lady’s on Thursday 9 March to work with the girls and to show them the work they have done on the app so far.  The girls were joined by a group of P7 pupils from St. Joseph’s in Cardowan who came to see how an idea can be turned into a working app.  Well done to the girls for their idea of the “Lifesaver”.

S5 Study Weekend

36 S5 pupils spent the weekend at New Lanark Youth Hostel from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 February where they followed a timetable of study tutorials to prepare them for their Higher exams in May.

The subjects tutorials on offer included English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Modern Studies and Geography. A huge thank you to all the staff who gave up their time to benefit our young people.

This is the third year we have organised the study weekend and every year pupils have commented on the huge amount of work they managed to do, how beneficial the tutorials are and how good the food was!

Pupils feel better prepared for their final exams and we wish them well.
