S2 Parents’ Evening – Change of Date

S2 Parents’ Evening – Change of Date

Following the closure of the school last week because of the poor weather, we have taken the decision to postpone the S2 Parents’ Evening which was scheduled to take place tonight (5th March). This meeting will now take place on Monday 12th March from 4.30pm-6.30pm.

Any appointments already made will be carried forward to 12th March. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this decision may cause, and for the very short notice of cancellation, however we believe this is the best decision under the circumstances.

School Closed – Wednesday 28th February

S5 Study Weekend

S5 Study Weekend

48 S5 pupils who are studying 4 or 5 highers attended a very worthwhile study weekend at New Lanark Youth Hostel. They participated in subject tutorials for English, maths, social subjects, biology, chemistry, PE and Spanish to help prepare them for the SQA exams in May.

We also had a group quiz on Saturday night ably run by our resident quiz master Mr Dickson. The teachers team were the overall winners!

Pupils evaluations of the weekend included comments like: “enjoyed working in smaller groups” and “beneficial to have one to one time with teachers”

Scottish Studies Burns Lunch

Scottish Studies Burns Lunch

On Wednesday 31 January at lunchtime, the S3 Scottish Studies pupils prepared a ‘Burns Lunch’ for a small number of staff as part of their hospitality unit.

With the help of Mrs. Burke, Mrs. Varty and Mr. Maxwell, the pupils selected one member of staff each, created and handed out invitations, organised the event, and even had a hand in the preparation of the excellent food. The pupils created a seating plan, name plates and on the day served the food, but not until they had delivered an excellent address to the haggis.

It was a fantastic event which epitomised the principles of nurture and wellbeing, as pupils and staff gathered together to eat and converse.

Well done to all pupils involved; Sean Allen, Aiden Fox, Emma Foy, Ryan McLaughlin, Owen McQuillan, William McShannon, James McWilliams, Chloe Paterson and Reece Souch.

Geography Fieldtrip to Millport

Geography Fieldtrip to Millport

In order to prepare them with the knowledge and skills required for writing up their Geographical Study a group of 14 pupils travelled to Great Cumbrae for the weekend.

This involved a river study in Brisbane Glen on the Noddsdale River and a coastal investigation on Kames Beach and an Environmental Quality Survey on the Impact of Tourism on Millport.

The weekend was a great success and was extremely beneficial to all our pupils. The hospitality of the fieldwork centre was great with all meals provided and greatly appreciated after all the hungry fieldwork.

The resolve of the pupils was tested to the limit though due to the blizzards, hailstorms and freezing temperatures that come with being outdoors in Scotland during the month of January!

Creative Residency

Creative Residency

Congratulations to our pupils who had work displayed at the Creative Residency Exhibition at Summerlee Museum, Coatbridge which features outstanding work in Art & Design, Musical Composition, Creative Writing and Drama.

Well done to Challum Brown, Cara Celino, Kiara Hanlon, Matthew Jaffray, Simon Lynch, Alexander Moffat, Matthew Partridge and Eva Wynn on their outstanding efforts. A particular thanks goes also to the staff who supported them in this across the year.

The pupils participated in a week-long residency at Kilbowie during the last week of term in June 2017. The pupils were then given the opportunity to take part in a Masterclass, honing and refining their new skills learned while in Oban. The work produced from both the Residency and Masterclass will now be showcased at Summerlee Museum.

PE Department Activities

Our S1 and S2 Heptathlon teams performed extremely well in the North Lanarkshire Heptathlon held at Ravenscraig on Friday 9 February. A huge well done to Chelsea Allison who stepped up to the mark and performed against the boys when one of our own boys failed to make it due to illness. Chelsea is a real team player and showed great resilience.

Leadership

Our Senior Sports Leaders have been out and about in some of our cluster primary schools delivering sports sessions. This experience is helping our young peoples planning, delivery, assessing and evaluating skills. It has been great to see an improvement in confidence of some individuals.
