To prepare for the forthcoming S2 BGE Subject Choice exercise all S2 pupils participated in a Subject Champions Event on 23 February.
This involved all pupils researching information about each subject within the different curricular areas. S6 pupils represented each department, preparing excellent displays and practical activities showcasing employability skills and future career paths linked to each subject. They were able to answer questions from our S2 pupils and provided them with a fantastic taster for each subject.
S6 pupils worked very hard in their personal development time to prepare and their hard work and preparation ensured the smooth running of the event, which was also presented to parents at the S2 Parents’ Information Evening. S2 pupils will continue to be supported in Health and Wellbeing to ensure that they are making very well informed course choices!
S1 Geography classes recently enjoyed a visit from Zoolab to supplement their work on the Amazon Rainforest. Owen, from Zoolab, brought in lots of reptiles for the pupils to see including a tarantula, snake and a frog!
The pupils have been learning all about animals in the Amazon Rainforest and everyone really enjoyed seeing them in real life!
The S3 boys football team won their Lanarkshire Cup quarter final in Wishaw, against St Aidan’s High School on Wednesday 7 March.
The game finished 2-2 after full-time with goals from Ross Hamilton and Aaron Welsh. The boys went on to win 5-4 on penalties.
The semi final will be played at a neutral venue sometime after Easter. Congratulations to the boys and good luck in the semi-final!
Three of our pupils had recent success in the Scottish Schools Swimming Championships in East Kilbride.
Elle O’Reilly S3 came 2nd in the 100m butterfly and 4th in the 200m individual medley.
Euan McDonald S4 came 6th in the 200m backstroke and Callum O’Reilly S1 came 12th in the 200m backstroke. Congratulations to them all!
Advanced Higher Physics pupils attended their second visit to Strathclyde University to complete work on their Advanced Higher Physics projects.
Many thanks to Strathclyde University for the use of their facilities and particular thanks to Ken Muir and Shirley Wylie for their support in making this possible.
The postponed Study Saturday has been rescheduled for Saturday 17th March. All subjects that were offered on the day will be offered and there is no need for pupils to complete another form.
Following the closure of the school last week because of the poor weather, we have taken the decision to postpone the S2 Parents’ Evening which was scheduled to take place tonight (5th March). This meeting will now take place on Monday 12th March from 4.30pm-6.30pm.
Any appointments already made will be carried forward to 12th March. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this decision may cause, and for the very short notice of cancellation, however we believe this is the best decision under the circumstances.
As advised on the North Lanarkshire Twitter “Due to the severe weather all North Lanarkshire Council schools will be closed tomorrow Friday 2 March 2018.”
The Study Saturday scheduled for Saturday 3rd March is also postponed. Further details will be given when possible.
Please follow @OLHSCumbernauld on Twitter for more information and advice for pupils.
48 S5 pupils who are studying 4 or 5 highers attended a very worthwhile study weekend at New Lanark Youth Hostel. They participated in subject tutorials for English, maths, social subjects, biology, chemistry, PE and Spanish to help prepare them for the SQA exams in May.
We also had a group quiz on Saturday night ably run by our resident quiz master Mr Dickson. The teachers team were the overall winners!
Pupils evaluations of the weekend included comments like: “enjoyed working in smaller groups” and “beneficial to have one to one time with teachers”
