Geography

On the 16 May, 40 of our S1 Geographers went to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs for the day to reinforce their learning on Scotland. They all did fantastic and managed to climb to the summit of Conic Hill, which gave them an iconic view of Loch Lomond itself.

In the afternoon we visited the tourist centre of Loch Lomond shores, where pupils got to learning about marine and freshwater creatures in the Sea Life Centre.

Language Perfect World Championships

Once again Greenfaulds High School pupils are out to prove they’re the best in Scotland by taking part in the Language Perfect World Championships. This year we have 100 competitors aiming to learn as much vocabulary as possible over the course of the 10 day competition. There are 17 languages to choose from this year – as well as the usual French, German and Spanish, GHS pupils are also top in the country in languages as diverse as Greek, Arabic, Chinese and Russian! Students have answered a whopping 160 421 questions since Monday morning, and earned 28 certificates. We’re aiming to beat last year’s points total and are well on the way. For every 100 points pupils earn, their name will be entered once into the prize draw organised by the Modern Languages department to win vouchers of their choice. There are also special prizes for the pupils who come 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each language. Our current leaders are as follows, but with only a few hundred points between them and 6 days still to go, it’s all to play for!

S3: Chloe Hawthorne, Conor Smith, Ava MacKinnon

S2: Samuel James, Emma Adams, Jay Brown

S1: Fraser Young, Leona Jaap, Emma Prach.

Daily updates are available from the Modern Languages Twitter page: follow @ghsmodlangs to see the leader board!

Greenfaulds High School Art and Design Department

2017 is the year of History, Heritage and Archaeology and the Art and Design Department at GHS have been successful with a heritage lottery fund bid for Stories, Stones and Bones sharing heritage funding. The amount of the bid is £10,000.

The Art & Design project is called ‘A Sense of Place: The Roman Presence in Cumbernauld’ and the key local heritage sites are Bar Hill Roman Fort and the Antonine Wall. The Art & Design department are looking forward to taking pupils on trips to see the Roman fort and Antonine Wall, as well as Roman artefacts in collections at the Hunterian Museum and the National Museum of Scotland. Pupils will also be working with Scottish artist Kate Leiper to create illustrations for an illustrated brochure about the heritage sites and the Roman presence in Cumbernauld. The grant will also provide materials for Roman-themed printmaking, illustration and pottery activities for hundreds of S1-S6 pupils at GHS, and staff and pupils at GHS are also looking forward to creating some artworks with pupils at Redburn School. Everyone is excited about showcasing the project at the local Cumbernauld Museum and in special exhibitions at GHS throughout the next year, engaging the local community with their heritage.

HARRY POTTER BOOK NIGHT

Beware! Greenfaulds High School is home to several witches and wizards! S1 – S4 pupils gathered in the school library on Thursday evening to celebrate Harry Potter Book Night. Pupils took part in a mini Triwizard tournament in the hopes of winning a mystery prize.  Activities ranged from dangerous wizarding duels (not for the faint hearted), brewing their own potions and taking part in quizzes to test their wizarding knowledge. In the end, the Ravenclaw house team proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with and won the tournament.

Pupils did themselves proud and showed that the magic of Harry Potter still lives on!

TURAS GÀIDHLIG FORT GEORGE

The Gaelic Higher pupils have, this term, been studying a poem called Air An Somme by Dòmhnall Dòmhnallach (Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna). The poem is written from the poet’s own personal experience of the battle. This trip allowed the pupils to see where Dòmhnall undertook his army training before making for the battle, as well as letting them see the conditions in which they had to live at the time. A very enjoyable and informative trip was had by all.
