LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY

At Greenfaulds High School, we are aiming to be proactive in doing more for the LGBTQ+ community. We are working towards Silver Charter status with LGBT Youth Scotland and have included an LGBTQ+ committee within the school pupil parliament to ensure a difference is being made for LGBTQ+ individuals.

The school website has more information LGBTQ+ | Greenfaulds High School (glowscotland.org.uk)

 DIGITAL SCHOOLS AWARD

Following our recent Digital Schools Award Scotland validation visit, we are delighted to inform our school community that we have been successful in our bid to become a Digital School in Scotland.  Furthermore, we have actually been invited to be a mentor school.  We feel that this is testament to all the hard work and perseverance of our pupils, staff and parents in implementing our Digital agenda.  General Recommendations from the Report are noted below:

Greenfaulds High school is a thriving digital environment, with staff and leaders constantly seeking new ways to enhance learning and teaching. Digital technologies play a key part in their drive for school improvement.  Teachers and leaders have embraced all CLPL opportunities to ensure that skills and knowledge are current and effective.  These included personnel completing courses to support CRIS which they will cascade to colleagues to further enrich skill sets and empower learners.  Learners themselves will also support CLPL delivery, particularly regarding assistive technologies, during future INSET days.

Learners felt confident in digital skills and empowered to achieve individual and collective success.  Indeed, a key strength of the school is how greatly it values the contribution of learners in shaping school improvement. One example lay in the student led creation of the AUP, bringing a bespoke touch to the document. Similarly, the school has a learner driven podcast featuring topical items such as social justice and Cop26 – manifesting the espoused school values.

Digital technologies are prevalent across the school and some of the most powerful narratives about their application came from learners with additional support needs, explaining how access to assistive tools transformed their engagement with the curriculum.  Especially heartening was the discovery that such tools were being utilised in more than one subject.  Effective transfer of skills ensured that the learner experience was enhanced across the school day and not limited to a certain period. Moreover, the learner articulated how current skill might be useful beyond school.  In Greenfaulds HS, preparation for the world of work certainly included a rich, digital dimension.

Learners however were not alone in their appreciation of digital tools, staff spoke enthusiastically about the motivational benefits, the capacity for consolidation of key facts, the ease and diversity of formative assessment and the efficient nature of communication. Multiple examples of such were provided.

In conclusion, it was clear that the school community of Greenfaulds HS were working together successfully to continue their positive journey in digital development.

PE DEPARTMENT

Scottish School Athletics – First Weekend Results.

Huge congratulations to the following Athletes who won medals on the first weekend of the championships.  4 Medals at this stage is an incredible achievement, and testament to the hard work and dedication of the pupils, parents and the athletics coaches at Cumbernauld Athletics Club and beyond who work so hard with our athletes.

Amy Kennedy S6 – Gold Medal in Pentathlon

Angus Gay S1 – Gold Medal in the Hammer Throw

Euan Wallace S5 – Silver Medal in the Pentathlon

Sophie Robertson S1 – Silver Medal in the Hammer Throw

In total, 14 athletes are competing in this National Level Schools’ event, with a good number more nearly at a level to do so.  This reflects the increasingly talented pool of athletes that are being developed, and the continued growth of the sport locally.

S2 FOOTBALL FINALISTS

The S2 boys football team made the Scottish Plate Final on Tuesday night, after beating St Maurice’s on penalties. A huge congratulations to all the squad!

The final is on Monday the 13th June at Bayview Stadium in Fife. Any support for the team would be greatly appreciated.

 S1 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

The Social Subjects faculty enjoyed a Geography trip on the Fife Coastal Path walking from Crail to Anstruther. For the most part we had glorious sunshine and only a short light shower on the walk. Pupils felt challenged on the walk but it was worth it in the end for a visit to the Anstruther Fish Bar. Everyone was a credit to themselves and the school.

AUTHORS IN SCHOOL

We were delighted to welcome authors John Fardell and Matt Oldfield to school.  John, who is an author and illustrator, ran an interactive session with two S2 classes on the creativity of using pictures and words to create an engaging and dynamic story. Matt, author of many books about famous footballers, used the session with S1 pupils to talk about using a passion for the subject when writing.  We would like to extend our thanks to both John and Matt.

“Very interactive and fun” (Daniel, S2)

“Really entertaining to hear about how he (Matt) started writing.” (Mia, S1)

ART DEPARTMENT

There are a number of S2 pupils working on a mosaic over the next couple of Wednesdays with a Scottish artist Alan Potter as a special project sponsored by Brodies LLP and gifted as a prize – Brodies Inspirational Art and Design Department Prize 2021, RSA Schools Art Competition. The pupils are creating a mosaic inspired by the Covid pandemic which will help to memorialise the efforts and sacrifices made by everyone in the community. See @GHSArtdept on Twitter for pictures of the mosaic in progress from the 1st December. The completed mosaic will be displayed on the outside of the school next term.

SCOTTISH INTERFAITH COMPETITION

One of the schools entries to the Scottish Interfaith Competition has won a prize! The competition was about making a religious festival more eco-friendly and three boys from 1TH – Alex Mandache, Ethan Dunn and Luke Cooper – made a PowerPoint on the Day of the Dead festival and had loads of ideas about how it could be made more eco-friendly including food, costumes and transport. Well done to the boys and to Mr Galloway and Mr Muir for supporting and guiding them!
