*** New School: Important Info for Parents***

We are pleased to announce the new Greenfaulds High School will be open to staff and pupils on the 29th of September. To facilitate the move to the new school there will be a three day exceptional school closure on the following dates as approved by the Scottish Government;

  • Thursday 22nd September
  • Tuesday 27th September
  • Wednesday 28th September

***Please note these exceptional closure days are on either side of the September Weekend holiday, Friday 23rd & Monday 26th of September. A letter of confirmation will be distributed via school bag mail in the next day.

There will be an opportunity for ex pupils, staff and friends of the school to visit the ‘old’ Greenfaulds High School on the evening of September the 14th. Details to follow.

CENTRAL DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Greenfaulds High School competed in the Central Dance Championships in Larbert High School on Friday 10th June. We achieved 6 first places and 2 seconds in the competition. Level 2 acts – Aimee McCallum – winner junior hip hop solo and winner of overall judges choice hip hop dance of the day, Laura McPhail – Junior Contemporary winner, Shaun McConnell – mid hip hop solo winner and overall freestyle winner, Amy McPhee second place for mid jazz and second place for mid hip hop group dance (Natasha O’Neill, Aimee McCallum, Shaun McConnell and Amy McPhee). Level 1 winners of junior commercial were Ross Govan, Jay Brown, Erin Smith and Robyn Brophy. Outstanding achievements from some of our dancers against fierce competition. This adds to our result of winning the North Lanarkshire Dance Competition. A fantastic year for dance in the school! K Doyle.

AWARDS CEREMONIES

The school would like to thank parents, pupils and staff who attended this year’s Awards Ceremonies to celebrate the achievements of pupils across all year groups.

Congratulations to all the prize winners whose effort, positive attitude and ability throughout the year has enabled them to win an award, well done!

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE TO DATES FOR UNIFORM FITTINGS

Tuesday 2nd August (1-3pm) and Thursday 11th August (10-11am)

Blazers ordered before the 9th May will be available to pick up in school on the 7th June (10.30 – 11.30am). For orders made on any of the evenings or online after that date they will be available for pick up from the school on the 11th August (10-11am).

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

School closes for the Summer Holidays on Wednesday 29th June at 1:00pm. Buses have been arranged for 12:30pm.  Lunch will be available at 12 noon.

It will be the last show in our school theatre – all previous cast and crew members are welcome to return and celebrate the wonderful shows we have staged here down the years. The show runs for three nights – Wednesday 22nd, Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th June. Tickets are £5 from the school office. Everybody welcome. Come and help us see out our theatre with a fantastic, spectacular Disney experience.

PRIMARY 7 VISIT

Primary 7 pupils attended Greenfaulds for their two day visit last week

Staff at Greenfaulds had prepared a range of interesting lessons for the P7s. The children reported that they thoroughly enjoyed their experiences in the various subject areas. The Primary 7 pupils were fantastic during the visit. We wish them well in their final weeks of primary school and look forward to seeing them when they return in August as pupils of Greenfaulds High School.

School Show

Greenfaulds Book Group

Greenfaulds Book Group had a fantastic day celebrating young adult fiction at Cumbernauld Theatre on Thursday 21st April. Pupils from S1 and S2 were able to listen to readings from their favourite authors as well as quiz them the challenges of becoming a published author. Authors included Kirkland Ciccone, Victoria Gemmell, Alex McCall, Estelle Maskame, Alex Nye, Martin Stewart, and Elizabeth Wein. Pupils left the event feeling inspired and excited to try creative writing!

SQA Examination Study Leave

The national examinations start on Wednesday 4th May.

Registration for most S4/5 pupils will be suspended from Tuesday 3rd of May with the exception of pupils who have been identified as sitting no national examinations. Therefore, for those sitting exams, their last day in school will be Friday 29th April. Pupils not sitting exams will be expected to attend school as normal and provision for this period will be provided. The last day of study leave for pupils sitting examinations will be Friday 3rd of June.

All pupils moving from S4 to S5 next session will collect their timetable for 5th Year at an assembly on Friday the 3rd of June at 9.30am in the theatre (pupils sitting an exam can collect it before or after the exam). All pupils moving from S5 to S6 next session will collect their timetable for 6th Year at an assembly on Friday 3rd of June at 11.30am in the theatre (pupils sitting an exam can collect it before or after the exam). The new timetable will start at 8.55am on Monday the 6th of June.

The 31st of May will be the official leaving date for any S4 pupils eligible to leave and wishing to do so. Please note any pupil wishing to leave requires to complete a leaver’s form before this can be officially approved. Leaver’s forms can be obtained from the school just prior to the 31st of May.

All pupils who are sitting SQA examinations will be issued with an individual examination timetable. Please ensure pupils keep their examination timetable safe and arrive 15 minutes before every exam begins.

Pupils must wear school uniform at all times when in the school building and deposit any mobile technology at the office prior to entering an exam or risk exclusion from the exam.

Scottish Association of Geography Teachers (SAGT) quiz

On the 23rd March, 6 pupils from S2-S4 took part in the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers (SAGT) quiz. This was held within the school, and the pupils were competing against teams from Larbert High School, St Mungo’s High School and Dollar Academy. The teams had spent months preparing and demonstrated an excellent knowledge of Geography. Well done to our budding Geographers:

Rotary Young Technologist Competition

On Wednesday 9th of March 2016 3 teams of S2 represented Greenfaulds High School in the Rotary Young Technologist Competition held at Kilsyth Academy. Although some of the students were a little apprehensive, they soon got into the swing of building a bridge from various materials.

Their bridges had to meet a certain criteria. All the students met this criteria through hard work and effort. Overall everyone enjoyed themselves and asked could they come back next year!

YPI Project

The YPI is a project supported by the Wood Foundation which encourages young people to engage with local charities in their community. Participating schools identify groups to campaign for local charities, with the winning group being awarded £3000 for their chosen charity.   In Greenfaulds High School students in S2 in Modern Studies were chosen as the year group to take part in this project.

The winner of the £3000 Youth Philanthropy award was local charity PALS (Play and Learning Support), which works with children in the local area between the ages of 3 and 16 who have special needs providing them with activities such as soft play, teen scene, swimming, lego therapy, micro fitness, fun & games night, music class, day trips, cinema trips and support group for the parents/carers. The winning group consisted of Mhairi Stewart, Leah Stewart, Emily Miller, Amy Thomson and Shauna French.

Greenfaulds High School Drama Group

Greenfaulds High School Drama Group hosted a drama day for Gaelic speaking primary schools from across the Central Belt on Thursday 3rd March. The event took place at Cumbernauld Theatre.  Eighty primary school pupils from schools including Condorrat Primary School in Cumbernauld, Riverside Primary School in Stirling and Meadowburn Primary School in Bishopbriggs attended the day.

The day consisted of pupils participating in workshop including drama, performance, circus skills and green screen. Pupils from Greenfaulds High School also showcased their skills, presenting their films which included the film ‘De th’ ann an gaol?’ which won the award for Best Mobile Short Film at the FilmG awards in February.  The film can be seen on the drama group’s website, www.cruthaich.org. Drama days of this type have been hosted by the drama group in the past and it is envisaged that this will continue to be the case in the future.

RMPS Higher Trip to Samye Ling Buddhist Monastery

Students from the RMPS Higher class went on an all-day excursion last week to the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Monastery near Eskdalemuir.   As a means to deepen and enrich their understanding of Buddhism, they were given a guided tour of the stunningly beautiful temple and grounds. They also enjoyed experiences such as a guided meditation for beginners and monks using traditional Tibetan instruments as part of their chanting practice.

Easter School

Pupils have been issued with letters detailing all information regarding the upcoming Greenfaulds Easter School Event. Further information regarding this will also be available over the next few weeks. Easter School provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to receive additional supported study in the run up to the SQA exams.

S1 NUMERACY PUZZLE OF THE MONTH

S3 BIOLOGISTS

There are still 5 places left on the Edinburgh zoo trip on May 25th. Cost is £11. If you are interested then bring £5 deposit to Miss Forsyth in F14.

Greenfaulds HS News 17/3/16

Pi day

The pupils in Greenfaulds High decided to celebrate Pi Day to raise money for the school.

Pi day falls each year on March 14th when the date reads 3.14.

Pi is an irrational number but is usually rounded to 2 decimal places, which is 3.14!!

To celebrate all things circular each students, when in Maths, were treated to a doughnut while the teachers enjoyed some ‘3.14’ apple or lemon meringue pie for lunch. In total 660 doughnuts and 8 pies were eaten and the total money raised was £260.

The school also had its annual S1 ‘Pi Memorising Competition’. This year’s winner was Kate Buttenshaw who memorised Pi to a whopping 170 decimal places. Pi-tastic! In second place was Justin Adams and in third place was Aidan Pritchard. A huge well done to all pupils who took part in the competition.

Art and Design Department

S1 Extended Learning illustration pupils attended an illustration workshop with the Scottish artist and illustrator Kate Leiper on Monday 14th March (pm). Pupils enjoyed finding out about illustration and Kate Leiper’s artwork as well as illustrating part of a Scottish mythical tale: Assipattle and the Stoor Worm.

P7 pupils enjoyed a morning of art & design and drama activities; including painting, clay work, printmaking, costume design and still pictures, when they visited GHS for a visit on Tuesday 8th March. 42 pupils from all of the different associate primaries spent a morning together doing the different activities and mixing with some GHS S1-S3 helpers. Everyone produced some excellent work and put a lot of effort into their dramatic performances.

Easter School

Pupils will soon be issued with letters detailing all information regarding the upcoming Greenfaulds Easter School Event. Easter School provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to receive additional supported study in the run up to the SQA exams.

The Science Homework Club

The science homework help drop-in is on every Thursday lunchtime with Miss Cooper from 12.15pm in F07 for every S1&2 pupil. Any help you need completing your Science homework come along and ask. Miss Hamilton-Cooper

Maths Homework Club

Do you need assistance with maths homework or classwork? Homework club is available each Wednesday lunchtime. Mrs S Gallagher

Supported Study

Below is a sample of Supported Classes available, please see your individual teacher for details of supported study classes in their subject.

GeographyNational 5 supported study will be running each week on a Tuesday with Ms Reid and a Thursday with Ms N MacDonald at lunchtimes.  It will take place in each teachers classroom.

Supported Study for Higher English will take place each Thursday from 3.20pm-4.15pm.  Pupils should report to A17.  Pupils are strongly encouraged to attend in order to maximise their chances of success.

Supported Study for Nat. 5 English will take place each Friday lunchtime in room A17.  Pupils are welcome to bring their lunch.

Supported study for Nat 5 Biology in F07 on Monday Lunchtime from 12.45.Supported study is offered on a Monday after school from 3.45pm-4.30pm every week in F14.
