Our Departmental Aims

  • To promote enjoyment and choice within the English curriculum
  • To use a wide range of resources and approaches to cater for the individual needs of our pupils
  • To teach the key skill areas of reading, writing, listening and talking
  • To track pupil progress in these key areas
  • To involve our pupils in their own learning through active learning experiences, self and peer evaluation and target setting
  • To meet with, inform and report to parents
  • To create confident pupils who can transfer and apply literacy and social skills to real life situations, including future learning experiences and work placements.
  • To contribute to the ethos and wider life of the school

Curriculum for Excellence

S1-3 Broad General Education

Throughout S1-3 our pupils will experience a wide range of activities in English, as outlined in the Curriculum for Excellence guidelines, to develop their understanding of and skills in reading, writing, listening and talking.

Many S1 pupils take part in the  Read Write inc Fresh Start intervention to help develop their reading fluency and accuracy, or they take part in  the RTIC programme working on improving their comprehension skills.

Pupils who complete the Read Write inc Fresh Start programme then move onto the RTIC  programme.

S4-6 Senior Phase

We currently offer our senior students the choice of a wide range of national units and courses to match their needs and abilities. Where appropriate we aim to ensure progression through the levels

National 1 Communication Units
National 2 English and Communication
National 2 stand-alone units
National 3 and 4 English units
National 2-4 Media units

National 2 ESOL

In addition, some of our unit outcomes dovetail with the Scottish Studies award.
