British Sign Language

WELCOME TO BSL

Staff:  Mrs Helen Lennox

British Sign Language (BSL) is used in Britain and involves the use of hand movements, gestures, body language and facial expressions to communicate.  It is mostly used by people who are either Deaf or have a hearing impairment.

The BSL (Scotland) Act was passed in the Scottish Parliament in September 2015.  This requires Scottish Ministers to promote the use and understanding of British Sign Language (BSL).  The aim of the Scottish Government is to make Scotland the best place in the world for BSL users to live, work and visit.  One of the goals for BSL is to expand the teaching of BSL as a language to hearing pupils in schools.  BSL is a skill for life and work.

Firpark has introduced British Sign Language to the Senior Phase curriculum and now offers the National Units
