Education Maintenance Allowance

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is an allowance of £30 per week, which can be paid to eligible students who stay on in education after the age of 16 years.

Eligibility 
You can apply for an EMA if you are a student staying on in education after the age of 16 years and you attend a North Lanarkshire School or CLD Learning HUB:

If you are:-

16 years of age or over before 30th September 2021, you may be eligible for an EMA from the beginning of the August school term.
16 years of age after the 1st October 2021 and before 28th February 2022, you may be eligible for an EMA from January 2022
The cut-off date for processing application forms for the academic year 2021-2022 is 31 March 2022.

No applications will be accepted after that date.

Students must be ordinarily resident in the UK. Generally, this relates to the qualifying date and the 3 years immediately before.

The income thresholds for EMA, for Academic Session 2021 – 2022 are as follows:

Please note – dependent children are all those up to the age of 16 and those over the age of 16 and up to the age 25 if they are in full time Further or Higher Education (proof required).

Education Maintenance Allowance application form 2021-2022 

Pupils who previously received an EMA award are required to re-apply and complete a new application form for session 2021/2022.
