Secret Codes in Primary 1!
Today we were using QR codes in Primary 1. We used the iPads to scan the codes. Once we had scanned them a picture of a farm animal an the word for the animal came up on the screen. We could mark our own work using the codes.
Leah-I liked that me and Harrison had shots each.
Kelsey- I liked that Nieve and I didn’t argue and took turns.
Noah’s Ark
We have been learning about the story of Noah’s Ark. Today we were building our own arks. We used lego, cardboard, the polygons and junk modeling to make our arks. We tested our arks to see if they could float in the water.
We think we could make models even better by making the bottom of the ark bigger. We noticed that tall models tipped over so we think we should try to keep them short. The small boats floated well.
We know that we have been very successful with our learning today because our most of our arks floated on top of the water.
Subtraction
We have been learning about take away in maths. We know that the take away sign looks like this -. When we see it in a sum we know we have to take some away. We know that the number of things we started with gets smaller when we take away.
We have been using cubes to help us to solve our take away sums in our jotters. We have also been using our number lines to take away. We need to remember to jump back so the numbers are getting smaller.
Some of our favourite activities have been the memory game, the treasure chest, the jumping buses, the giant number line and the lollipop stick sums.
We are very good at take away with cubes and number lines within 10. We think we could make it harder by taking away using our brainboxes and working with numbers up to 20.
Our Trip to Riverside Museum and the Tallship
Today we went on our first school trip. We went to the riverside museum and went on the tallship. Our whole class went with Mrs Troup, Mr Brown, Mrs Noble and a special visitor from P1/2, Chryston Ted.
At the museum we went to see the old streets, cars, trains, a tram, bikes, motor bikes and even a crashed car. We went around the museum in our little groups. There was a special lunch hall where we could have our lunch.
After lunch we went to the tallship. There was a soft play area where we could pretend to be pirates and even walk the plank. We seen the cargo, we were scrubbing the decks, we rung the bell, we seen barrels and we saw the treasure chest but we couldn’t open it because it was locked.
We think our trip was fantastic, awesome, fun, brilliant, very good and all sorts of other super words too!
Our Senses Science Investigation
Today we completed our first science investigation. We thought about what would happen if all crisp packets looked the same. We decided that we would be able to use our sense of smell and taste to help us work out what flavour the crisps are.
We tested our theory using 4 different flavours of crisps. Some flavours were easier to work out than others but we worked them out as a class and enjoyed eating our crisps too.
Fairtrade Day
We’re Going On A Bear Hunt
We have been thinking about our 5 senses and used them to explore the story of We’re Going On A Bear Hunt.
We used our sense of hearing to match musical instruments to each part of the story. We used our sense of touch to explore the ice cold water. We used sight to read our stories in the Bear cave using
torches. We explored the deep dark forest with construction materials and used thnimals to look at different footprints.
Kyle – When you shine the torch up you see lots of colours.
Kelsie – The icy water was freezing.
Kobi – I used Lego to build a tree for the forest.
Leah – It was hard to see in the cave. We found bear footprints inside.
Homework
Here is the homework sheet for weeks beginning 29/2/16 and 7/3/16
The Chinese New Year
For RME we have been learning about the Chinese New Year. We made lanterns. We used red paper and glitter. We had to use our cutting skills and we had to put glue on for the glitter to stick. We made them red because it is a lucky colour in China.
We read a story about the animals of the Chinese New Year. The story was about the animals having a race. We learned that this year is going to be the year of the monkey.
We acted out the story using the puppets and the water tray. There was some Aqua beads in the water tray. We liked the feeling of them.
We were making cards. We had to decide who to write it for. We had to write the inside of the card. We had some cards to look at to help us if we got stuck. We also had word mats to help us write our own stories.
We had to find sweets and coins using tweezers. We put them into the envelopes just like the children get under their pillows.
We were making the animals from the story using 2D shapes.
We even had a go of writing our numbers in mandarin. Some of us even had a go of making sums.
We want to say thank you to Mrs Woodward for coming to help us with our tasks. We had great fun!
