Maths

This week we have been learning about time.  We learned o’clock times.  O’clock times means the big hand needs to point to the 12.  The big hand is called the minute hand.  The little hand is called the hour hand.

If the time is 3 o’clock, the big hand points to the 12 and the little hand points to the 3.

Our week

Wow, what a week…we’ve been busy bees in P1.

At the start of the week we planted seeds as part of our living things topic.  We learned what the seeds would need to survive and wrote about it.  We know  that the seeds will need water, light and air to grow and survive.  We also thought they would need our love and care!

we also started learning about symmetry in maths.  We made symmetrical butterflies for our living things wall by painting one wing of the butterfly then folding it over to make the other wing exactly the same.  Symmetry is like matching only the other way round.  The two sides are the same but one will be back to front of the other.  We also made symmetry patterns with pegs and with lots of art materials.

At the end of the week we were printing with the bottom of bottles.  We made lovely spring blossoms using beautiful spring colours.  They are up in our classroom and it looks very spring like!

this morning we watched the eclipse with P1/2.  It looked like the sun was actually the moon.  It looked like it was night time but it wasn’t!  We then used pastels to draw pictures of the eclipse!

Directions

We have been learning about directions. We know forwards and backwards, left and right. We know how to use the Beebots. Beebots have buttons on them to press go and it drives. It can go sideways and backwards and forwards. You need to press left and right, forwards and backwards and go to make it move the way you want it to go and it goes on a journey. There’s also a pause button and a stop button too. You need to clear the journeys before you start another one.

We made new Beebot jackets for them.

Directions

We are learning to follow directions in maths.  We have been learning forwards, backwards, left turn and right turn.

we use the bee bots to practise, the gym hall and we learned a left right song in music!

we have to program the bee bots.  That means we give it a few directions and it follows them.

in gym we gave each other directions to follow.

Doubles

We have been learning to add 1 digit numbers. We have been learning about doubles. This is where the two numbers are the same.

Adding is putting 2 numbers together to get one bigger number (Aydin).

The adding machine helped us (Marcus).

We set the table in the home corner for two teddies. We had to set each place exactly the same to make them like doubles.

The other game that helped us was on the smart board and we counted spots on the ladybird.

Look at our pictures!

Adding

We have been learning to add. Adding means finding the total of two sets. We have been doing lots of different games to give us practise and help us to get better.

We used a game on the smart board where we counted ladybirds on leaves.

We played a game with two sacks of toys that we added together.

Another station we use cubes to help us make the story of 5.

You can ask us story of 5 questions at home…we have been practising hard in class!!

5+0=5
4+1=5
3+2=5
2+3=5
1+4=5
0+5=5

Santa’s workshop

We have been having lots of fun learning in our class. We have made our classroom into santa’s workshop. One of the stations we can do it wrapping presents for Santa to put on his sleigh. We used our learning about shapes to design presents that boys and girls might like at Christmas time. We can go to the toys hop and there we learn to buy stuff. There are shopping lists and money and we can add prices together. There is a station where we can design and write a Christmas card.

Jaymi – I like learning in Santa’s workshop.

Michael – I loved designing a card.

Erin – I am looking forward to designing a card and writing a card.

David – I feel good when I come into the classroom because it is Christmassy and colourful!
