 Why study National 5 Health and Food Technology?

Health and Food Technology is a hands-on practical subject that is particularly suitable for those who are interested in cooking, food and health. The course will teach pupils how to prepare healthy food as part of a balanced diet, and how to make food choices that are good for your health.  It helps pupils to develop important skills such as creative thinking, problem solving, planning and organising. Or for those with a career interest in: food preparation and service, food and drink manufacturing, food science and technology and dietetics and nutrition.

What other school subjects might help me to be successful?

Entry is at the discretion of the school but would usually require the completion of a National 4 in Health and Food Technology or a National 5 in practical cookery.What pupils will study? 

Health and food technology is a practical subject that develops a pupils’ food knowledge and cooking skills. They will learn about food, nutrition and dietary needs, as well as storing, preparing and cooking food safely and hygienically. These skills will help pupils make informed food and consumer choices, which can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

How is the course structured?

The course centres around three key themes.

  • Develop understanding of the relationship between food, health and nutrition.

 

  • Develop confidence in explaining current dietary advice.

 

  • Understand dietary needs for different age groups.

 

  • Develop practical skills in preparing food products, to meet individual needs.

 

  • Expand your knowledge of the properties of food, and how they are used in developing new food products.

 

  • Make food products to meet different dietary needs.

 

  • Develop and apply knowledge of safe and hygienic food practices and techniques.

 

  • Explore factors which may affect food choices and learn more about contemporary food issues.

 

  • Consider technological developments in food, and organisations which protect consumer interests.

 

  • Investigate how food labelling helps consumers make informed food choices.

 

  • Apply your knowledge and skills in practical ways.
