Eco Schools

eco flagAirdrie Academy were visited in March 2016 by the Keep Scotland Beautiful Organisation to showcase the Eco development work which has been on-going for the last 3 years.
The Eco Team and their link teacher, Miss Pearce, (shown above in the picture) have been working on individual taks from the 10 topics in order to retain the schools Eco status.
Praise of the higest form was given to this small group of students for the variety of work and dedication shown towards promoting Eco Awareness throughout the school and the school has been awarded a new Green Eco Flag to display proudly.

Eco02On 24th January, Local MSP, Alex Neil, presented the pupils and staff of Airdrie Academy’s Eco group with their new flag.

Over the last two years the pupils of Airdrie Academy have been working hard to retain their Eco Schools’ status and, on the 9th of September, 2013, the school was inspected by Eco Schools Scotland.

On the 20th of December 2013 the school officially found out that they had provided more than enough evidence to be able to keep flying their Flag!

The pupils achieved this by taking on the recommendations from the last inspection by installing a Suggestion Box and involving the local community more. The pupils did this with gusto! The suggestion box was made by the grandfather of one of the group’s junior members and the senior pupils produced a wallet sized brochure that suggests ways of reducing your carbon footprint at home, at work, in the car and in school. This was issued to around 1500 homes in the local area with the help of one of our affiliated parishes.

Over the past two years the school have concentrated on Litter by having litter picks and introducing more bins to the school’s social area. The group have tried to reduce their energy consumption by encouraging pupils and staff to be more aware of switching off lights and using computers.

The pupils were also recognised for their charity work, recycled fashion shows, the work done for the Saltire awards and paper recycling.

This was a tremendous effort by the whole school and the Eco group can’t wait to keep up the excellent work over the next two years with many new ideas already happening – digital newspaper, can collection and litter minimisation!
