Kids Lit Quiz 2019

On Wednesday 30st of October, two teams represented Airdrie Academy at the West of Scotland Heat of the Kids Lit Quiz held at The High School of Glasgow.

The Kids Lit Quiz is an annual global literature quiz with the winning team from each heat competing in a National Final. National champions then compete in the World Final.

Both teams worked very hard to prepare for the event and did very well on the day. Although we didn’t make the top three, the final result was close. Pupils also had the pleasure of meeting Quiz Master Wayne Mills and had the opportunity to purchase a book by visiting authors Elizabeth Wein (Code Name Verity, Black Dove White Raven), Alex Nye (For My Sins), Victoria Gemmell (Follow Me), Lindsay Littleson (Guardians of the Wild Unicorns, The Titanic Detective Agency) and Ross Sayers (Mary’s the Name, Sonny and Me).

The day was a fabulous celebration of books and reading and the pupils were a credit to the school.

Read to Succeed – Author Visit

Alex Scarrow

As part of NLC’s Read to Succeed initiative, Airdrie Academy had the pleasure of welcoming writer and illustrator Alex Scarrow.  Alex is best known for his teen science fiction series TimeRiders.

S1 pupils were treated to Alex’s enthusiastic presentation which focused on the books he writes, the inspiration behind his writing and the creative writing process.

Pupils were enthralled by his reading of the opening first two chapters of TimeRiders book one.

After his presentation, Alex kindly stayed on to answer the many questions asked by pupils inspired by his work. Pupils also had the opportunity to purchase a book and have it signed for which there was a large queue!

All pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure and the school library has a large collection of books for pupils to access and enjoy.
