Health Week – Lots of Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds!

The pupils of Keir Hardie took part in a wide range of activities throughout the fortnight to do their bit for their own wellbeing and the environment.  As well as learning lots of valuable skills and knowledge the children had lots of fun!!  The programme included gardening and planting vegetables, healthy cooking, litter picking, safety talks from the fire service and the police, health talks from ‘Landed’ and the dental nurse and many sporting activities such as table tennis, basketball, football and dance!  Many thanks to all the outside agencies who helped manke our health week possible.

Have a look at a selection of photographs from over the two weeks.

Health Week Update

Our health fortnight began on Monday and the children have been participating in a wide range of activities linked to health and wellbeing.  On Tuesday all classes took part in a Tae-Kwon-Do taster session.  The children enjoyed learning some self defence moves and were faced with some fitness challenges.  Primary 7 visited Brannock High on Tuesday afternoon to take part in fitness testing organised by the PE department.  On Wednesday many classes and the nursery children took part in a dance taster session.  Every day we have been running a Walking Bus and I’m pleased to say that we are seeing more and more people joining us!  This will continue next week.

The primary 5’s ‘Tooty Fruity’ enterprise topic is going from strength to strength.  The sales are great and feedback on the smoothies and healthy bars are very positive.  Let’s hope that business continues to boom next week!

Primary 1 Induction Visits

On Tuesday 13th  and Wednesday 14th May we welcomed 27 hard working boys and girls to our school for their primary 1 induction days.  The children participated in a range of different activities throughout the two day visit, including having lunch in the cafeteria! They had the opportunity to meet their P7 buddy and explored the school and playground. Lots of fun was had by all and I’m sure there will be lots of tired boys and girls in Newarthill tonight!  We look forward to welcome you all back again in August!

Spring Fayre

This year our Spring Fayre was held on Saturday 22ns March.  It was a great success.  We had a great turn out with many great stalls including the nail hair, temporary tattoos, the bouncy castle, a sweetie shop, beat the goalie, arts and crafts, tombola, raffles, balloon modelling and many other stalls.

Everyone who attended the event thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  We raised over £2000 and all the money raised will go towards school funds.  We would like to thank the Parent Council and the teachers who organised  the events and helped out on the day.

Sport Relief

On Friday 21st of March the pupils participated in numerous sports activities to raise money for Sport Relief.  These included Zumba with Miss Melvin, Beat the Goalie, Wii activities, Sports Quizzes, outdoor activities and a poster competition. We also sold healthy energy bars and fruit smoothies.  All of the teachers helped throughout the day and it was a great success.  Thank you also to the Citizenship and Charity Committee who help organise the day.  As a school we raised £150!! Many thanks to all who contributed.

Story Teller Visit

On Thursday 30th January, Primary 1 and 1/2 were treated to a visit from story teller, Allison Galbraith.  The children listened attentively and participated in telling a range of stories about animals and a traditional Scottish folk tale about fairies.  The children were hooked on every word and throughly enjoyed the visit.  The visit signalled the launch of the Infant Story Bag Library and this has helped to promote reading in school and at home.

Scottish Assembly

On Friday 24th January we held a Scottish assembly to celebrate Robert Burns Day.  All classes performed a variety of scottish songs, poems and dancing to a packed audience of parents and grandparents.  Many classes also held a Burns’ Supper with children sampling haggis, neeps and tatties.

Christmas Jumper Day

On Friday 13th December  staff and pupils  helped to raise money for several children’s charities by wearing a Christmas jumper to school.  We raised over £170 by collecting donations of £1 that will be shared between Save The Children, Robyn’s House and Utange Orphans, Kenya .  Christmas jumper day was a brilliant opportunity for our school to have some end of term festive fun while raising money to help children at this time of year.

End Of Term Treat

As a reward for excellent behavior throughout term 2 the children of Keir Hardie Memorial were treated to a visit from Fuzzy and Britta’s Circus School.  The day started with a show for the whole school, moving onto all the pupils participating in small workshops where they were given the opportunity to learn a range of skills such as plate spinning, juggling, stilt walking and many more. It was a fantastic day that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.  Some quotes from the children:

Jordan (P7) – It was really good. I especially liked the workshops as you could choose what activities you wanted to do and there was lots of different things to try.

Chloe (P5) – It was hilarious because they told funny jokes and tricks.

Nevadah (P5)-  It was a bit scary when Miss Burbage nearly got her ahnd cut off, it looked sooo real!  I really enjoyed it.

Heather (P3) –  My favourite part was when Fuzzy jumped over miss Miller on the mini bike, it was really funny!
