Animation Kit at Glenmanor

This kit was used in one of the P6 classes.  The children were learning about USA as part of an interdisciplinary topic as part of this the children have carried out research on weddings.  They used play-dough to take their knowledge and create characters to set up a wedding scene.  The children incorporated work on Elvis that they had completed.  They used the animation kit and made movies.  These movies were were included in a Keynote presentation that the class produced and shown at the school concert.  The use of the animation kit gave the children the opportunity to develop their ICT skills in a new context.  They really enjoyed creating their very realistic characters and viewing the completed work.

St. Aidan’s Primary

The children in St. Aidan’s Primary used the flipcams during Golden Time. They worked as a small group of 10 children, between P1 and P3 and had a camera each. They made two movies in an eight week block and the children decided what the themes should be. The initial theme was Golden Time itself and the second one was Fairyland, a joint infant topic. They captured images and edited them using i-movie and showcased their efforts at a whole school assembly.
This Golden Time activity group filled up very quickly when it was offered. The children were extremely motivated to take the images and to be part of them. It was a worthwhile activity and will be extended into the upper school next.

Nintendo DSi at Glenmanor

ICT was identified by HMIe as an area for improvement within the school.  As a staff we felt it would be beneficial to widen the learning experiences through using other types of equipment.  As a result of this we have borrowed the consoles twice over two years.  Previously they had only been used in P7.  On this occasion all classes within the school were given the opportunity to use the set of Nintendo Dsi.  All children responded very positively to the use of these in class.  The equipment was used to motivate learners and to develop skills in maths and language through the brain training activities.  In some classes the children recorded their scores and set themselves personal challenges to improve.  The scores that the majority of the children were receiving by the end of the term showed a good improvement in speed and accuracy.  They were also used during Golden Time and had a positive impact on behaviour in some classes.  The children were so disappointed when they had to be returned and we would definitely look to use them again.

Using DSi Balmalloch PS

Our P.4/5 class had the pleasure of borrowing a set of DSi consoles this session.

They had an absolute blast using them! Not only were they a wonderful way to consolidate learning in Maths and build on quick thinking skills, but they served as an excellent motivator for my reluctant workers.

An excellent teaching and learning tool which I’d thoroughly recommend and would love to use again.

Flip Camera – St. Edward’s P.S

The Primary 6 class were working on a Film and Media topic. Children had to use the Flip cameras to create their own short movies. Before the filming the children created a script, make scenery and props. Then children recorded their films and edited them adding sound and text effects.

Children enjoyed using the cameras and this enhanced their knowledge of using technology to support their learning. They were able to capture images and were responsible for editing their own films. Since then the children have regularly used flip cameras for different projects.

The children showed their completed films to other classes and experienced success doing this.

One issue I had was trying to copy the films from an apple mac computer onto a disc for children to share with parents. I think this was something to do with the amount of space on the computer. Unfortunately, this problem has not been resolved.

I-Touch in Kirkshaws

Kirkshaws had use of the I-touches from the loan centre in the second term this year. They were used in most classes in a variety of ways . The most common use was taking photographs, short videos and using the pre-installed apps during maths and language times as well as playing a part in our ‘Go For Green’ reward afternoons.

The children benefitted from having several devices as it allowed most of the children to take active part in the activities together. They experimented with creating short sideshows using Sonic Pics lite as well as creating slideshows for assemblies incorporating their own video footage

Rebecca – “I used the i-touches to go around the playground after lunch to take pictures of the litter during Eco week. Mrs Steel then helped us make a slideshow to show at assembly.”

Litter

Jordan – “They were really fun and a change from always using the laptops. We used them for lots of things but mostly to play maths games and stuff like Maths Pop. Because there were more of them we got more chances.”

Shannon – ” I liked the Octopus App and challenging my pals at it. We also took them to Tesco’s when we did our bag packing to take video and photos to show the rest of the school what we did.”
