Ipods

Primary 6/7 really enjoyed borrowing the Ipods. WE did lots with them including research for our topic, Maths games, French games and vocabulary and the dictionary to help us with our Language. We would love to buy some of our own.

iPod Touches At Keir Hardie Primary

This session I used the ipod touches to support teaching and learning across the curiculum within my p5/6 class.  The children  used these frequently to access the internet and carry out research.  This freed up the school laptops for other classes to use.  Other uses for the ipods included:

* Maths /Language games

* Note taking

* Taking pictures and video footage of events within the class

* Creating comic strips with pictures and captions

* Exploring the wide range of apps to enhance many curricular areas

* Reward at Golden Time

The children enjoyed using this resources and have suggested raising funds to purchase our own next session.

Thank you

Calder Primary- Nintendo DS and Dogs

As part of a whole school topic on animals our Primary 2/3 class wanted to use the Nintendogs game on the Nintendo DS. The class used the game mainly at Golden Time. This was good as the smaller number meant that the teacher could circulate and help where necessary. The children needed little help and were very good at using the technology. The games were very motivational and helped initiate discussions based on animals and their care.

The Primary 6 class also used Nintendo Brain Training as an activity in Maths. The children really enjoyed using the game and again the biggest benefit that it had was in motivating the children. The children wanted to improve their brain ages and liked the challenge that the game presented. They were completing mental maths challenges in a fun and interactive way that really gripped their attention and didn’t make them feel like they were really working!

Calder Primary – Flip Cameras

Background

As part of transition our Primary 6 children planned a short video that would be useful to new parents and pupils of the school. They decided that they would video a typical school day, familiar faces and some of the work that they were really proud of to help answer any questions that new starts might have or alleviate some fears.

Learning and Teaching

The children worked in small groups to film different aspects of school life. They then added all footage to I Movie and took turns to order and edit the video clips. When they were satisfied with the video footage they then added music and titles with important details about the school day. After this they then showed a preview to some of the other classes and then used their evaluations to make final changes before burning disks for all of the new children coming to the school.

Advantages of Flip Cameras

The cameras were really small, light- weight and easy to use. All children managed to film and add footage to I Movie successfully. The fact that these cameras were portable was their main advantage as the children could film both outdoors and indoors in a variety of places.

Conclusion

The children learned a lot during the filming and worked well in cooperative groups. The cameras were really easy to use and could easily be used with younger children as well as with children in the upper school. The children felt really proud of the final DVD and many commented that using the cameras and making the DVD had been the highlight of their year. The new starts were also delighted with their gift. I’m sure that we would work on a similar project in the future as a way of helping with transition.

Nintendo DS Brian Training at Greengairs Primary

Greengairs Primary pupils loved using the Nintendo DS Brain Training throughout Maths and Golden Family challenges. The consoles were fantastic and the children noticed a significant improvement in their number, shape, problem solving and mental maths .

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to use the consoles. We hope we can borrow them again in the future.

Easi-scopes – Eastfield Primary School

Background

We borrowed the Easi-scope equipment as a useful tool to supplement the learning and teaching of our Science topic ‘Investigating Plants’.

How ICT supported learning and teaching

The Easi-scopes were used enable the pupils to explore the various parts of flowers in greater detail and record the intricate make-up of flower parts.  This coincided with the class picking their own flowers to dissect from the school grounds and then deciding which part of the flower they wanted to firstly research and then place under the microscope.

Impact / conclusion

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed looking at the parts of the flowers in greater detail and were amazed at the textures and colours they could se under the microscope.  They also extended their knowledge and understanding of I.C.T. and worked co-operatively with others to achieve their goals.  After taking still pictures under the microscope, the pupils were then able to upload them onto the class Blog (through GLOW) and left evaluative comments on what they thought of each other’s pictures.
