Rights Respecting Schools Update: Term 2

We were absolutely delighted to be accredited as a ‘Gold Rights Respecting School’. We are looking forward to continuing to celebrate our achievement as a school. In term 3 we will be working with the Eco Committee to focus on littering in our local area. We ran a poster competition this term to highlight the issues of land and sea pollution in our local area. We were super impressed with all of the amazing entries across the full school.

November 2021 – Update

Elderbank Primary School are delighted to announce that they have been accredited by UNICEF as a Gold Rights Respecting School!

Having been assessed by a UNICEF Professional Adviser who looked at  the whole school’s rights respecting work and the impact that has been made through embedding children’s rights into school life we have been accredited with the Gold Award.

Well done to Miss Drummond, the RRS Committee and the whole school for their super work!

OutRight Campaign 2018 – 2019

Here at Elderbank we are working towards our Gold Award for Rights Respecting Schools. To gain this award we have been taking part in the OutRight Campaign which is focusing on air pollution. The steering group, made up of children from P3 to P7, learned about the campaign before asking each class to focus on this issue during World Children’s Day in November.

The focus on air pollution raised awareness on Article 24: The Right to good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment. Our pupils took part in a range of activities to educate them on how polluted air can damage their lungs, the development of their brains and stunt their growth.

‘1 in 3 children is growing up in parts of the UK with hazardous levels of toxic air’unicef.org.uk

Here is a selection of some of the great work that went on around our school! Some classes created posters, while oothers studied Paddington’s life in Peru compared to London or created memes to spread the word on social media.

ALSO…We are awaiting our results from the diffusion tube which the RRS group set up outside the school to test the levels of air pollution in our community…we will present our findings when we receive them!

Rights Respecting Schools Concert

Elderbank Choir gave an outstanding performance at the Rights Respecting Schools concert in Greenwood Academy on Wednesday 20th Sept. Their efforts were greatly appreciated at this fundraising concert on behalf of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Hopscotch Theatre Visit

The whole school enjoyed a performance from Hopscotch Theatre Company. The show explored why it is important to have Children’s Rights in the first place and why it would not be a good idea to give them up.

Primary 5/6H got to try out the stage and props from Hopschotch Theatre Company’s Rights Respecting Schools play.

Class Charters

Logan and Robert sign our class charter after agreeing what actions we would all try and take to help maintain our rights.

The Elderbank Choir performed beautifully to celebrate Children’s Rights at our recent Harvest Assembly. Thank-you to Mrs White, Mrs Walker and the boys and girls for their all their hard work and talent.

Mrs Wilson, Chair of our PTA and our Headteacher Miss Robertson, look on as Chellie Brown, Chairperson of our Pupil Council signs our Declaration of Commitment.

The Declaration of Commitment tells everyone how Elderbank Primary is committed to protecting the rights of children at Elderbank Primary and to support the rights of children wherever they are in the World.

Elderbank Choir performed at the Greenwood Academy Rights Respecting Schools Concert held on Wednesday 14th September 2016. The concert was supported by all primary schools in the Greenwood cluster and Elderbank were proud to play their part in supporting the concert which helped raise funds for North Ayrshire Young Carers and UNICEF.

The funds raised have helped provide some respite for North Ayrshire’s Young Carers and will also provide some inspired gifts for children overseas. These gifts include; Tetanus vaccines for 1000 children, a bicycle, a vaccine carrier for a health worker and chalkboards for 100 children.

A big thanks to Mrs White and Mrs Walker for rehearsing our star performers from Elderbank and of course a huge thanks to our choir members for giving up their time and talent to make the concert such a wonderful and worthwhile event.
