September Update
Literacy
P4 have been studying ‘Charlotte’s Web’ for our topic and created a menu on Microsoft Word using food that we would find on a farm. We thought about cakes using flour, eggs and milk and chips being made from potatoes.
Health and Wellbeing
People from ‘Big Breakfast’ came in and we had the opportunity to eat a variety of healthy breakfasts. We learned about different foods and how easy it was to make tasty meals. We loved tasting the food and getting the gift bag.
Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL)
For Outdoor Learning, we went into the Outdoor Classroom and looked for spiders. We used magnifying glasses and magnifying boxes to count the spider’s eyes and legs.
October Update
Literacy
For spelling, we used lots of strategies to remember our spelling words. Our favourite ways to learn are through scrabble, playdough and using technology.
Numeracy
In numeracy, our circle group did a fantastic job at subtracting and adding to 20. They identified missing numbers and were able to say all of their number bonds. They completed a mosaic for Hallowe’en!
Religious Education
In October, we researched special buildings for different religions. We discussed each religion and how important it was to worship in a safe place. We built a mosque, a church, a temple and a synagogue using construction materials.
November Update
Interdisciplinary Learning
For our Knights and Castles topic, we learned about the different features of a castle. We focused on arrow loops, turrets and drawbridges and discovered why they were important. We used our knowledge of the features to build a castle.
Rights Respecting Schools
We have been learning about the rights of a child in class. We focused on the needs of children from when they were born until they are 18 and linked them to our rights.
Art
P4 created fireworks using paint and forks for bonfire night. We learned about firework safety to make sure that we were safe when visiting firework displays.
December Update
S.T.E.M
P4 used cocktail sticks and marshmallows to create a structure that will trap a gingerbread man. We considered size and shape. It took us a few attempts but we got there in the end!
Music
We learned ‘Jingle Bells’ on the glockenspiel. We identified the different keys and played along with the music. We had great fun.
R.E.
P4 went on a visit to Dreghorn and Springside Parish Church to learn about the Christmas story. We watched a LEGO video on the birth of Jesus and got to look at the different parts of the church. We saw the steeple, pulpit and alter.
January Update
Literacy
P4 have been studying the poem ‘Nessie’ by JK Annand. We have been using our presenting skills to share the poem to the class. We have focused on eye contact, clear voices and actions.
STEM
For our Scotland topic, we have been looking at Scottish landmarks. During S.T.E.M, we could choose 2 Scottish landmarks to create using KAPLA, technology or LEGO. The boys created the Glenfinnan Viaduct and we think it looks amazing!
Maths
Some of the class have been learning about symmetry. We created symmetrical shapes out of playdough, put symmetrical patters on the butterfly and looked for patterns in nature.
February Update
Diversity Day
For Diversity Day, P4 chose to learn about Islam. We invited in a guest speaker, tried dates and decorated Islam symbols. It was very interesting to learn about Ramadan and we enjoyed tasting the food that some Muslims eat to break their fast.

P4 created a beautiful memory tree for the ‘Elderbank is 10’ performance. We discussed memories from Primary 1-Primary 4 and it was great to reflect on our time at school.
