Numeracy and Mathematics

At Bluebird Family Centre we recognise the importance of children having experiences and opportunities to develop their numeracy skills in a high quality environment. Our staff are skilled at promoting opportunities for children to improve their knowledge and understanding of early mathematics can help children make sense of the world around them, develop an understanding of number concept and develop the ability to use problem solving skills to support their everyday life.

Children develop their sense of size and amount through experiencing changes in their environments and noticing differences in shape, measure, volume, depth and amount. Children have opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through daily experiences such as making play dough, playing the sand and water, block play, building obstacles with loose parts and exploring shape, patterns and colours through games, puzzles and technology.

Across the nursery, even our youngest children are given opportunities for block play, as we recognise the important influence of Froebel’s principles on children’s learning and play in today’s early years practice. Froebel believed that block play supports children’s creativity, problem-solving, and imagination, while also laying strong foundations for mathematical and scientific thinking. Through block play, children learn about balance, shape, and space, develop collaboration and communication skills, and gain confidence in exploring and expressing their ideas. At Bluebird, we have witnessed some incredible creations from our children using blocks, both indoors and outdoors. Block play is something we greatly value and celebrate, as it showcases children’s imagination, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.
