Maths is Fun?

For me, even the word “maths” has connotations of dread, boredom and simply just not enjoyable. Traditionally, maths is taught on a blackboard, followed by textbook work to consolidate the learning. What if, however, you simply don’t understand the explanation, switch off halfway through because you aren’t engaged and then have no idea how to […]

What is the problem with feminism?

In today’s society, you hear someone mention the word ‘feminism’ and it is followed by sarcastic remarks plus some sniggering. Feminists are seen by some as women who hate men and are set out to destroy them. That is nowhere near the truth. They are women who fight every single day to ensure women are […]

Maths Anxiety

What is maths anxiety? According to Mark H Ashcraft, chair of the department of psychology at the University of Nevada, maths anxiety is “a feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear that interferes with math performance” (Guardian, 2015). These feelings of fear are something that I can relate to, as I have experienced them myself. This was one of […]

Is Maths a Language?

“Is maths a language?”  There are thousands of languages across the world – English, Spanish, German, French… all taught across schools and reinforced as being important to succeed in later life with jobs. So why is this attitude not portrayed with maths? Math is a language that has been used thousands of years. It is […]

Boys will be boys?

There’s so much talk nowadays about gender. Binary, non-binary, fluid, female, male, the list seems never ending especially when the majority of us have been brought up knowing only two and those two have been so separated that we find it difficult to see how they can merge. A few weeks ago there was an […]

This is very powerful post. You should be proud. Very engaging and well written. Your comment about being vegan made me laugh – is that the new edge of acceptability?

Maths Anxiety: What We Should All Fear…

The subject of Maths is divisive, even beyond the system of education, and it has the potential to greatly impact people’s everyday life (both for good and for bad, depending on someone’s experience with it during their school years) (Bellos, 2010). It has been argued that it has the potential to separate humans into two […]

Stop Bullying

I came across this video on facebook and found it really inspiring to keep in my blog. One thing i am fearful for working in a school is dealing with the problem of bullying. I find it very upsetting seeing a child getting hurt and lacking confidence due to someone else’s verbal comments. After viewing […]

Comment on Homophobia in us all by Richard

Kara this is an excellent post. You have raised such an important issue here. The idea that some people have to reveal their difference, or worse feel they can’t be themselves, shows we are not as enlightened as we think. I encountered a difficult situation sometime ago, someone (who was gay) talked to me about activities more suitable for them, i.e. going for a coffee rather than playing football. I didn’t know what to do or say. I knew this was a stereotypical view, but didn’t feel, as a straight man (I don’t think I’m gay), I could challenge this. I realise now we should have discussed this, as I would racial stereotypes. The issue here isn’t the stereotype but is the fear of talking or discussing sexuality. The more it is talked about the faster it will not need to be talked about at all. Over the last few decades we’ve stopped talking about race and racism, assuming it was no longer an issue. That’s clearly rubbish. In all issues of prejudice we need to be open, transparent, stop making assumptions and all this should start with children. They understand and embrace individuality better than any adult. Time we learnt from them.

You are never really “out”. There is always a new person you need to break the news to, whether that be friends, family or colleagues.

The experience that you describe above is one that I have never really appreciated until you explicitly outlined it in your post. Thank you for helping me open my eyes a little further Kara.

Maths, Play and Stories

“Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength” (Ginsburg, 2007). Friedrich Froebel explains that a child does their best thinking and learning whilst they are playing. Play within education is fundamental to a child’s holistic development. It helps to make connections in their learning in […]

Is the World Moving Forward Or Going Backwards?

In 2017, people find it difficult to express themselves. The common term ‘think before you speak’ has never been more relevant. Generations above us had no difficulty with saying what they think, and to be fair still don’t to this day. However, society nowadays will always find a flaw with something you have to say, […]

Binary, Counting Horses, Indigenous Tribes… Oh my!

Richard’s last two inputs about number systems and place value have left me perplexed to say the very least. Binary, a counting horse and indigenous tribes… All these aspects were covered in two inputs and they definitely broke down my structured beliefs on what mathematics really is. A key point that I took away from […]

Maths, Play and Stories

Following our recent input with Eddie on the links between maths, play and stories, I decided that this was an area I would like to research further into as I never quite realised just how much of the mathematical knowledge that our young children first acquire is through play based learning. Maths and Play One […]

Finding your voice

Our first lecture in the values module looked at the themes ’empathy and the sociological imagination’. Before this input, we were asked to look through various materials and one video, a talk by Clint Smith, in particular has stuck with me over the last few weeks. Sharing your thoughts and opinions is a struggle that … Continue reading “Finding your voice”

“Everyone is different…”

“But that means everyone can fit in” (Paddington The Movie, 2014) Just from one quote, Paddington the Movie could stem a lot of lessons about inclusion, respecting diversity and expressing feelings. However, this was not the reason behind watching this film. We had been told about Paddington the Movie in our social studies elective as …

Scotland in Spain

Highland Fling  Through my MA2 Placement I was able to travel to Almeria to teach in a local school over there. What amazed me most was the focus and importance on the English language. However, most of the children were not as aware of Scotland as they were of England. I spoke with my class […]
