Comment on Dance can be for Everyone! by Richard Holme

What an insightful post. The conclusion encouraged me to reflect on when I taught dance with a P2 class and used extracts from the Billy Elliot stage show to encourage the class. It halped my confidence and that of the learners. Dance certainly is for everyone. This post is really well written. Have you thought about sharing these more widely? Thanks for sharing!

Learning Language- My Experience

Language was an area of the curriculum that I really enjoyed when I was in school. It is an extremely important area of the curriculum as it is a way of expressing ourselves and a key way for us to learn. There are four areas of language: writing, reading, speaking and listening. When I was […]

Making Dance Personal

Dancing is definitely not one of my strong points – sure I’ll dance around to music I like, but dancing on a professional level, I cannot do. I used to be told that the noises I made thumping around while dancing could be compared to those of an elephant running in a herd. Anyway, when I […]

Initial Professional Goals

It is the end of my first week back to university and prior to my first placement I have been looking into the Standards For Provisional Registration (SPR).  Looking into the standards has helped me to make some initial decisions on my first placement goals. I have taken into consideration different types of goals for […]

workload wages and woe

In 2015 I decided i was going to write my Higher portfolio piece about a group of professionals  i believed to be hugely undervalued by society….. teachers. i wanted my teachers especially Miss Duncan to see how much i valued everything that they did not only for me but everyone at the school.  So here […]

Dance can be for Everyone!

A rush of anxiety flowed through me at a velocious pace when I heard our workshop was going to be on dance. I stereotypically pictured a dance workshop with mirrored walls and a choreographed routine that we would have to memorise and repeat. I recalled on memories from school where I was a hesitant child […]

Dance Workshop Reflection

Before today’s workshop I was nervous at the thought of having to teach dance to a class, as I was unsure where to begin or how to work in a manageable way.  I was also apprehensive about the dance input, and concerned I might be asked to create some complicated choreography and perform in front […]

Reflecting on our Dance workshop

Our first input for “Teaching across the curriculum” for Expressive Arts was a workshop with Eilidh Slattery. Before going in I did feel nervous as to what we would be tasked with however I felt I had at least an idea of dance within the classroom. My previous work experiences have involved a lot of […]

The Importance of Dance

I was pleasantly surprised by Eilidh Slattery’s dance input and the importance of dance in the curriculum has become even clearer to me. In the Expressive Arts Principles and Practice (Curriculum for Excellence), it is stated that dance is essential to children’s educational experience as it “promotes self-esteem” and teaches “creativity and innovation”. It is […]

Dance Workshop

My first input within the module Teaching Across the Curriculum was a dance workshop. The workshop opened my eyes to realise that it not only is an aspect which keeps the children active it also allows them to develop many other aspects of their learning. It allows the children to have fun whilst developing themselves. […]

Teaching Across the Curriculum- First Dance Workshop

I attended my first dance workshop today with Eilidh Slattery. I didn’t really know what to expect as we entered the room, because I don’t think there was a lot of dance lessons when I was in primary school. Obviously, there was Scottish country dancing (which I loved), however, I do not remember any lessons […]

Reflection of Dance Workshop

When reflecting on Eilidh’s Dance workshop, it was a much different experience than I had initially imagined. Fortunately for me, I really enjoyed it as I found it very intriguing and sparked many developing ideas for me to take with me on placement. Honestly, being a Highland Dancer myself, I had certain expectations going into […]

Reading

The most prominent memory I have of language is reading. “Biff and Chip” are my most memorable language experience from primary school, these are a series of stories that we used for our reading groups. I remember these novels because our teacher related learning activities to these books and we also had a large display […]

First Experience of Dance

Before participating in the dance workshop I was nervous about having to teach dance in the primary school. I assumed it would require me to learn the basics of many different dances, however, I have now realised this is not the case and has made me feel much more confident in teaching dance. I now […]

Racism is on the go

Why we are judged on the base of colour, where you came from and diversity as in cultural identity? Do we all not have the same need for respect, safety and identity? These are the questions, if we ask our self and how we can make the society a better place to be for every […]

Dancing an opportunity to engage

This morning, I had an experience of dancing with group of education students. As I had experience of supporting students with teacher guidance in schools but not learning myself as a student. I thoroughly enjoyed my input from the teacher and I felt that she was an inspiration to me to teach and enjoy dancing […]

First week back

It’s the start of semester 2. There were a couple of timetable glitches which immediately sent me in to panic mode….”How will I work”, “when will I spend time with my own children?”. Luckily my employer has been accommodating and my husband has the flexibility in his working day that he can help with the […]

Year 1, Semester 1

Semester 1 went so quickly! I had 2 main modules to complete. Values and Working Together were the modules. I was looking forward to my values module as the content interested me. Dance- Actively Engaging Children

This morning I participated in a dance workshop and it made me understand in great depth how dance can be used in schools to allow children to learn in an active way. Not only does it improve the fitness of children but it can also develop many other skills without them even realising. I learnt […]

Intertwining learning with my not-so-favourite activity

The Teaching Across the Curriculum module has been the one I’ve been waiting for. A reason why becoming a primary school teacher was so intriguing to me in the beginning was due to the fact that they explore a wide range of subjects with their class. I have always wanted a job where I am […]
