Meet Fiona, a Flood Risk Consultant
Flood Risk Consultants are specialists who provide guidance on flood risks and how to manage them, ensuring the long-term safety and resilience of projects. They identify possible flood risk associated with various projects and develop plans for risk reduction. A Flood Risk Consultant will work with a range of people, such as property owners, architects, local authorities and developers. Useful skills as a Flood Risk Consultant are a logical approach to problem solving and good geographical knowledge.
Fiona really enjoyed Geography and Sciences in school but didn’t have an idea of what her future job looked like. Her geography teacher encouraged her to undertake a degree in Geography and Environmental science where she went on to focus on the physical side of geography and hydrology.
Midway through her degree Fiona also undertook a summer placement within Ecology, and got involved in lots of wildlife surveys. While at this summer placement Fiona got to speak to and make connections to the flood team where she now works. Fiona also worked within a land consulting team for a short time which involved stakeholder engagement and mapping and uses these skills in her current role.
What she loves most about her job is getting out into the fresh air on surveys and getting to see many different parts of the country. Outside of work, she enjoys hillwalking, skiing and baking. She also used to be on her university’s rowing team and has paddled down many rivers across the country!
