SSERC Winter Bulletins

SSERC’s popular Primary Science & Technology Bulletin and SSERC Bulletin are available to download for all members from the SSERC website. All Local Authority school and college teachers and technicians are automatically members of SSERC. The majority of Independent schools are too.

SSERC has provided a range of equipment to Local Authorities on long term loan.

  • 5 Mystrica Mark II colorimeters which can be connected to PCs, iPhones, iPads and Android devices
  • UV-A sensor, voltage probe, Geiger-Müller tube, light sensor, gas pressure sensor and magnetic field all of which connect to the Vernier Labquest 2 data logger made available last year.

Independent schools wishing to borrow any of the above items should contact SSERC directly.

We have also sent for Technology Departments in all secondary schools a ‘Band Saw Buddy’ and an Inventor’s micro:bit kit. To find your local authority contact for this equipment please click here

Benmore Centre for Outdoor Learning, by Dunoon, Argyll

Fieldwork has been given a high prominence in the new National Qualifications. This event aims to provide practitioners with skills and ideas to deliver creative, quality fieldwork in a relevant context, and to enthuse participants to take their subject outside the classroom.

Accommodation and all catering are provided at Benmore. The event is free for teachers in City of Edinburgh Council schools. For non-CEC teachers a cost of £24 per night will apply.

Please register your attendance by Friday 26th February to allow transport, catering and accommodation to be planned.

Development Officers work in partnership with colleagues from across the education system, Scottish Government and other national organisations to develop, promote and support effective and innovative approaches within their specialist areas. Working in teams led by Senior Education Officers, we are seeking Development Officers in the following areas:

Science
Health & Wellbeing
Technologies
Candidates should possess a relevant degree in teaching and be registered with the GTCS. You should also have excellent knowledge of Curriculum for Excellence and be able to contribute to its continued development and implementation. Demonstrable experience in the relevant discipline is required with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
The Development Officer posts are being offered on a 23 month secondment basis and can be based out of any of the Education Scotland offices subject to local availability.

The E-CLIC Landscape Competition was announced on January 25th 2014 and will run until September 30th 2014. Participants are invited to submit an idea / project based on the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) devices and tools to face a challenge for the landscape, with respect to the principles of the European Landscape Convention. Participants can compete in one of three categories (Secondary Education Pupils, University Students and the General Public) and win a trip to Estonia, where they will have the chance to present their idea and take part in the international E-CLIC Competition.
Choose one of the three challenges for the landscape in our country and put your imagination to work – you have four months to think, prepare and submit your project, either as an individual or in a team (if you are aged under 18, please do not forget to get permission from your parent or tutor at the personal data form).
The Scottish/British challenges are as follows:
 
Offshore renewables in coastal landscapes and seascapes.
Allotment gardens and change in urban landscapes.
The historic shaping of upland landscapes.

THE SCOTTISH LEARNING FESTIVAL 2014: RAISING ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTAINMENT FOR ALL

SLF 2014 is completely FREE for everyone to attend and will support practitioners as they explore a wide range of practical approaches, resources and research aimed at improving achievement and attainment for all learners in Scotland.

There will be inspirational keynotes speeches, conversation and debate in the professional discussion sessions and professional learning seminars where you can engage in activities and learn from practitioners and young people;

This includes a number of seminars specifically aimed at addressing the sciences curriculum.

Young learners from Crookfur Primary School, East Renfrewshire and Cleeves Primary, Glasgow, have helped launch the new Dams to Darnley Environmental Education Pack.

The pack, which has been written by Countryside Ranger Eilidh Milne, is structured around Curriculum for Excellence and provides lesson plans and ideas for countryside ranger-led activities in Dams to Darnley and school grounds. It also includes lesson plans for outdoor learning activities for teachers, either within the country park, school grounds or local green space.

The pack can be downloaded at www.damstodarnley.org/pack  and there will be a limited number of additional printed copies available on request.

Dams to Darnley Country Park is a partnership project between East Renfrewshire Council and Glasgow City Council.
