GLASGOW AND CLYDE RIGHTS BASED LEARNING
Eight local authorities in the Glasgow and Clyde area formed a management group to support Rights Based Learning. We endorse the premise that children and young people can raise their achievement at school and improve the quality of their own and their families lives if they learn what their Rights are. Children and young people will make informed decisions and become confident, active citizens if they are aware of their rights from a young age and if this is reinforced throughout their school life. Children’s self esteem is developed through Rights based learning.
Children and young people learn that Rights apply everywhere. This promotes acceptance of diversity and rights respecting communities. The United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) provides a moral framework that children can relate to and it introduces at an early age the ideas of interdependence.
As a management group we aim to:
Inspire educational establishments to include rights based learning;
Motivate educational establishments to support each other; and
Showcase examples of good practice.
We will continue to share training and development of the Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) across the Glasgow and Clyde area in order to build capacity and further Rights Based Learning.
“UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the Convention at the heart of a school’s ethos…. The Award scheme is an effective way of inspiring and supporting schools who want to provide children and young people and the wider school community with a rights-respecting guide to living. It also provides a framework to connect a range of school initiatives that are intended to promote the rights of children and young people.”
