Block One (August – December 2026)

As we begin the new term in our new classroom, the children will learning new routines and building new friendships and becoming familiar with our new classroom.

Below is an overview of the learning planned from now until the Christmas holidays.

Our Class Community

At the start of term, we will work together to create our Class Charter. We will explore our school values of being Safe, Ready and Respectful, discussing how these help us build a positive and supportive learning environment.

Using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), we will learn about children’s rights and consider how these support everyone in feeling safe, included, respected and ready to learn.

Topic – Scotland’s Place in Europe

This term, our interdisciplinary learning will focus on Scotland’s Place in Europe.

We will:

Explore Scotland’s location within Europe

Learn about European countries, cultures and languages

Compare physical and human features across Europe

Investigate Scotland’s connections with Europe through trade, tourism, history and culture

Discover famous landmarks, traditions and geographical features

Develop mapping skills using atlases, globes and digital tools

We will also consider what makes Scotland unique while exploring similarities and differences across Europe.

Numeracy and Mathematics

This term, our maths learning will focus on building strong number sense and developing confidence with key concepts that support later learning.

We will explore:

Fractions – including equivalence, simplifying, comparing, ordering and finding fractions of quantities

Decimals & Percentages – place value to hundredths, links bettween fractions/decimals/percentages, and finding percentages of quantities

Core number skills – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies

We will also do some work with:

Literacy

Throughout the term, we will continue to build on previously developed literacy skills, focusing on improving both accuracy and creativity in reading and writing.

Writing

Using our topic and class texts as inspiration, pupils will create:

Narrative stories

Letters and emails

Travel brochures

Poetry

We will continue to use VCOP to encourage ambitious vocabulary and effective sentence structure.

Reading

Pupils will develop comprehension and discussion skills through class novels and group reading activities. We will explore Literature Circle roles such as:

Predictor

Questioner

Clarifier

Illustrator

Word Wizard

Talking and Listening

Children will have regular opportunities to share ideas, present information and participate in discussions, with a focus on attentive listening and respectful communication.

Health and Wellbeing

Our Health and Wellbeing programme will support children in developing positive relationships, resilience and a greater understanding of themselves and others.

This term we will cover aspects of RSHP, including:

Emotional wellbeing and body image

Love and relationships

PE

PE will take place every Monday. Children should come to school dressed appropriately for this.

This term we will focus on invasion games, developing skills such as passing, receiving, moving into space and defending. We will also complete a short block of dance.

Reading Books

Reading books will be issued on Friday and should be returned by Monday for group reading activities.

Regular reading at home remains one of the most effective ways to support children’s progress. Thank you for taking time to read and discuss books with your child.

Digital Learning

Pupils will receive their iPads this term and these will regularly be used to support learning across the curriculum. Digital technology will help children access resources, work collaboratively, develop creativity and share their learning. We will also continue to develop safe, responsible and respectful use of technology.
