Block One (August – December 2026)

Our class teacher is Miss Brown, and Mrs Chalmers on Tuesdays.

Please check back on our class page throughout the year to see what we have been learning and getting up to in Primary 2.

Numeracy

This term we will be developing our mathematical understanding through:

• Numbers to 100
• Addition and subtraction
• Shape
• Equal and not equal
• Measurement

We will develop our skills through practical activities, games, discussion and written work.

Literacy

Our literacy learning will focus on reading, writing, listening, talking and grammar.

This term we will be:

• Reading for a range of purposes
• Beginning our spelling and grammar learning through the Jolly Grammar programme
• Developing our writing skills through the PM Writing programme, beginning with description and recount
• Starting our literacy circles, with a particular focus on discussion and prediction
• Visiting our school library to explore genres and reading for choice

We will have lots of opportunities to talk about books, share our ideas, listen carefully to others and develop our confidence as readers and writers.

Our Topics

Term 1: Houses and Homes

We will be exploring Houses and Homes, looking at different types of homes and developing our understanding of where and how people live.

Term 2: Planet Earth

We will explore Planet Earth and develop our knowledge and understanding of the world around us.

RSHP

In Term 2, we will take part in Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) learning.

Our learning will focus on:

• My body and privacy
• Friends and friendship
• Looking after plants and animals

We will be using the national RSHP resource, which you can find at https://rshp.scot.

Physical Education

Our main gym day will be Tuesday. Children should come to school dressed in their gym kit and will remain in their kit for the whole day.

On Fridays, we will take part in PE through teamwork activities and, weather permitting, the Daily Mile.

Children do not need to wear their PE kits on Fridays.

French

This block, we will be focusing on:

• Greetings
• French numbers
• Days of the week
• Joining in with French songs and rhymes

Homework

Homework will be sent home every Friday.

This may include:

• A reading book
• ORT common/key words
• Tricky words
• Spelling and grammar words that we have been working on during the week

Our School Values

We regularly talk about our school values of Safe, Ready and Respectful.

These values help us think about how we learn, how we treat others and how we contribute to our school community.

Each week, the children help to decide the focus for our Recognition Board, based on one of our school values.

We look forward to a wonderful year of learning, growing and having fun together in Primary 2!
