Block One (August – December 2026)

Hello and welcome to our Primary 4 webpage. The children have settled well into their Primary 4 class, and we are all looking forward to an exciting year of learning ahead.

Class charter

The children have been learning about their rights and how we have roles and responsibilities to ensure everyone’s rights are respected. We worked collaboratively to develop our class charter and understand our school values: Safe, Ready and Respectful.

Topic

Our topic this term is ‘Fife’. We will be taking a step back in time and looking at Fife’s industrial history with a focus on coal mining, exportation (Methil docks and railway) and the production of linoleum.

Numeracy and Maths

The topics we are aiming to cover this term are:

• Place value of numbers to 1000/ 100
• Addition and subtraction of 3-digit numbers (written and mental strategies)
• Time
• Problem solving – 1 step word problems and understanding vocabulary to solve a problem.
• Multiplication – 2 and 4 times table

Literacy

In literacy we will be working on developing our tools for writing with a focus on punctuation, presentation and spelling of high frequency words. We will be learning about the structure of a diary and using this to write a diary related to our topic.

In talking and listening, children are developing their understanding about what makes a good listener and learning how to respond and ask questions to further their learning. We will also be learning skills required to have a debate about the rights of children and child labour in the mines.

In reading we will read weekly within our reading groups. We will also be engaging with our class novel – Haarville by Justin Davies. Using this text, we will be learning about Literacy Circles and focusing on the roles of the ‘Illustrator’ and ‘Predictor’. This term we will be also learning dictionary skills and how to use our understanding of alphabetical order to find the definition of a word using a dictionary.

Health and Wellbeing

As part of our health and wellbeing learning we will be covering:

• Children’s Rights (Class Charter and Topic)
• Friends and Friendships – First Level – RSHP
• Feelings and reactions and strategies we can use to help manage feelings and reactions
• Through physical activities and games, the children will be working on communication, listening skills, cooperation and practising fair sportsmanship.

PE – our PE day is on a Thursday and children should wear their PE clothes to school on this day.

Other information

Homework – Children will receive homework on a Friday and this should be returned on a Tuesday whenever possible. This will consist of reading, a small spelling task and times tables practice. Please spend some time going over your child’s reading with them and ensure the books are returned to school on time so that they can be used during reading activities throughout the week.

Welcome Meetings – Wednesday 23^rd  September. This will be an opportunity for you to come into your child’s classroom to see the learning environment and meet the teacher. Your child will tell you about their learning and this will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the year ahead.

MacMillan Coffee Morning – Friday 25^th September.

Harvest Service – Thursday 8^th October. This year Primary 3 and Primary 4 will be leading the Harvest Service. We look forward to seeing you there.
