Daily Writing P3-P7

Members of the Senior Leadership Team had experience of previous success in the approach to writing through the model of Improvement to enhance skills and enthusiasm in writing. It was therefore introduced to Benarty Primary school in August 2020.

The improvement model is based on the Ros Wilson Big Writing Criteria to develop appropriate Learning Intentions to create and plan criterion. The plan is to ensure Success Criteria are focussed and achievable and the learning Intention and Success criteria is used for a period of time as research evidence that repetition is impactful. The model of improvement also encourages self and peer assessment and the recording of data daily provides instant feedback to learners. There is also evidence of daily writing having a positive impact across all aspects of Literacy and other areas of the curriculum.

The teaching team received training around the planning, implementation, evaluation and assessment of writing and a focussed daily approach commenced in all classes from P3 to P7. The staff became confident in the creation of pareto charts and how this data can be applied to benefit the children. Support was also provided in the tracking of progress through run charts.

The purpose of the model of improvement is to identify what the children are finding the most difficult to achieve in their writing. Supporting around one success criteria, assessing, sharing progress daily and displaying success impacted greatly on the children. Almost all children are now responding with increased enthusiasm towards writing, they are looking to share their success and healthy competition across classes around the achievement of the success criteria has further motivated the children to succeed.

The teaching team have also become more confident in supporting the children who find writing a challenge. Daily opportunities have allowed for progress to become evident. The use of colourful semantics. Modelling and scaffolding is allowing for increased impact.

The impact of this programme will become more apparent over the next 2-3 years with attainment percentages continuing to increase and a more confident approach to writing across the school.
