Christmas KNEX in P5d

P5d have had a very fun filled Christmas week.

They were given a design brief to create a stable structure capable of supporting 400g weight and also include a moving part.

P5d love a challenge and worked very hard, in groups, to design, plan and construct Santa’s sleigh.

The finished models were extremely impressive. Well done P5d.

A very Merry Christmas to all of you and your families. Enjoy a well earned holiday break.  See you in the New Year, 2019!! 🙂

P5d Get Creative!

Design Technologies:

This afternoon, we have been very busy constructing models using a variety of recyclable materials.  Yesterday, we spent some time researching and planning out what we wanted to construct.  We considered the materials we could use, their properties, the time it would take and how we wanted it to turn out.

Today, we brought cardboard, paper and some boxes to school from home.  All of these materials are recyclable and we enjoyed putting them together.

We had great fun! We created shields, swords, daggers and more.  Have a look at what we made!

Well done P5d, you worked really hard on these.  Fantastic results 🙂

Breaking News!

We have been really enjoying getting our hands on newspapers and reading about current events.  First News and Newsround have been keeping us up to date with local and national news.

Christmas prep:

We designed and painted small Christmas tree pots.  These look really fantastic displayed in the corridor in school.

Very creative P5 🙂  They look really cool, Well done.

P5d Maths fun!

To consolidate our learning about fractions, we have been using active maths games and concrete materials.

This week, we used big materials to explore equivalent fractions.  We discovered which ones were the same and recorded that information in our jotter.

This was a great visual, fun way of exploring fractions.  Well done P5d, keep up the hard work 🙂

A week to remember in P5d

Primary 5d have had another action packed week.

Engineering:

On Monday we were very lucky to have a visit from some Civil Engineers.  After learning about some projects that civil engineers carry out, we took part in an activity investigating and demonstrating ‘Flood Risk’. We had great fun!

Remembrance:

This week, especially, we remembered all those special to us who have died.  We have learned about Remembrance Day and we did some activities to show our respect for those people.

Science:

In our next topic in science, we are going to be learning about Biodiversity.  This week we discussed what a diverse range of living things we have on our planet.  We are looking forward to investigating this further.

On Tuesday, we went out to the Chestnut garden to identify some living things in our local environment. We are looking forward to learning about habitats, species and ecosystems.

Reading:

We had a very chilled out morning in the library this week. We selected a book and found a really comfortable place to unwind and read.  Keep up the rich reading P5d!

Maths:

We are really enjoying having more active fun, in class and outdoors, with our maths learning.  This week, we continued using lots of active materials as we learn about division, fractions and decimal fractions.

Well done P5d! Keep up all the fantastic work 🙂

Learning Lots in P5d!

P5d have had a fun filled week  with lots of active learning.

STEM:

We have been learning about chemical changes. This week, we did a fantastic experiment to show how chemical reactions happen. We followed the scientific method to prove when one or more substance reacts together it makes a different substance.

Outdoor Learning Day:

Yesterday was Outdoor Learning day.  We planted lettuce and garlic chives. First, we put some compost into trays. Then, we sprinkled some of the seeds into the tray.  After that, we put some more compost on top and gave them a drink of water.

We have put them in our classroom windows and we are going to water them every day.  They need sunlight and water to grow. When they start growing we are going to each take a little bit home in our own pots. We are planning to recycle pots from home.

Good ideas for these pots include big yoghurt pots, butter cartons, ice cream cartons or bottles cut in half. We are also going to bring a bottle to school, so that we can water the lettuce in class.  When our seeds have grown, we are looking forward to eating them.

“I liked doing this because we are going to get to eat it when it grows. It was fun to measure how much compost we needed.” (Ethan)

“I liked it because we can make things out of what we grow.” (Laibah)

“I would love to grow tomatoes and basil so that we could make soup, pizza or pasta.” (Cara, Lewis & Lucas)

“I think potatoes would be great to grow because I like them and we could make chips, wedges or crisps.” (Lucy, Finn & Lewis)

“We could maybe grow strawberries.” (Joseph)

“We could make carrot soup if we grew carrots.” (Brodie)

Maths:

We have been working really hard this week at maths. We have been learning about fractions. We can recognise equivalent fractions, simplify and order fractions. We can also find quantities of a fraction. We have had lots of fun with big materials and games as well as recording our work in a jotter.

Well done P5d on another hectic week! 🙂

Another busy week in P5d

Primary 5d have been very busy active this week.

STEM:

This week, they planned, designed and constructed a model using KNEX.  There were some wonderfully inventive and ambitious structures.  Well done P5!

PE:

P5d have been enjoying having the sports leaders from St.Ninians down working with them.  This week they were working on fitness and basketball.

Outdoor Learning:

P5 have been learning all about China.  They were particularly interested in the Great Wall of China, which they researched and found out facts about.

Today, they used sticks, blocks, wood, stones and chalk to recreate their own Great Walls.

They had great fun in the sun 🙂 Well done P5d!

Another busy and productive week in P5d.

Have a lovely October break everyone!

P5d Outdoor Learning

Despite the bad weather, P5d persevered and went outdoors this week to do some Maths work.

Last week, we went to the Chesnut garden and collected sticks and other materials that were lying around the ground. Before we went out, we discussed what we might need to look out for.

This week, we went to the outdoor classroom and created symmetrical pictures and patterns using these shapes.

We also used our knowledge of 3D and 2D shapes to create models and pictures of shapes.

We worked in teams of 5 or 6 to read our brief and then collaborate to create our ideas.

Well done P5d. You worked very hard as a team and enjoyed your learning outdoors.  🙂

P5d Reflect on another busy week!

This week has been another busy week with plenty of fun and learning.

Our Lady of the Missions 60th Birthday

This week we went to St. Vincent’s church for Mass. We celebrated our schools 60th birthday. “Brodie”

It was a beautiful Mass and we all enjoyed a day of celebration for our school.  It was very interesting to learn some facts about the school and when it opened.  It was funny to think that our school opened with four children!

P.E. St. Ninians – Sports Leaders

On Tuesday afternoon, we went to St. Ninian’s to do sports.  We did athletics circuits. “Maya”

My favourite station was the hurdling one. “Ellie-Angel”

I liked the speed bounce one because you had to try and jump over the hurdle from side to side. “Vincent”

It was a fantastic opportunity for us to develop our fitness skills in St. Ninians with the sports leaders.  The stations were great fun and everyone really enjoyed themselves.  Thanks to everyone at St. Ninians for organising it for us.

STEM

This week, in the STEM room, we learned about changes of matter; solids, liquids and gases. I liked the sorting activity.  (Mirin)

Well done Primary 5 on another jammed packed week.  Have a lovely weekend!

This afternoon, we are reflecting on some of the things we did this week.

“We went to the STEM room, on Tuesday, with Miss Collins and Miss Gavin.  We did a science experiment.  We created a chemical reaction using vinegar and salt.  The solution cleaned a copper coin. I loved doing this because it was an active task and I had never done it before.” Lewis

“On Monday and Thursday we did the daily mile and PE outside.  We did lots of active games.  It was great because I like being sporty and active.”  Maya

“On Wednesday, we made cookies for our class charter, using Microsoft Word on Laptops. Everyone created a different cookie.  We voted to make our charter theme ‘Cookies’.  I loved using the laptops because it was fun and after we got a chance to play some games.” Rocco

Well done P5d! You worked very hard on your first full week back at school.  Have a great weekend.
