P5d Get Creative!

Design Technologies:

This afternoon, we have been very busy constructing models using a variety of recyclable materials.  Yesterday, we spent some time researching and planning out what we wanted to construct.  We considered the materials we could use, their properties, the time it would take and how we wanted it to turn out.

Today, we brought cardboard, paper and some boxes to school from home.  All of these materials are recyclable and we enjoyed putting them together.

We had great fun! We created shields, swords, daggers and more.  Have a look at what we made!

Well done P5d, you worked really hard on these.  Fantastic results 🙂

Breaking News!

We have been really enjoying getting our hands on newspapers and reading about current events.  First News and Newsround have been keeping us up to date with local and national news.

Christmas prep:

We designed and painted small Christmas tree pots.  These look really fantastic displayed in the corridor in school.

Very creative P5 🙂  They look really cool, Well done.

Have a look what 5A have been learning!

Role Play: Drama

We have been considering the importance of being kind and respectful towards others. We worked in groups and acted out different scenarios and chose the correct thing to do when someone is being treated badly. Have a look below:

Special Achievement:

Ruari won two medals for her Christmas Gymnastics competition! Well done Ruari!

STEM:

We have been learning to classify different animals into the five main vertebrate groups. We played games to help us learn about different animals before researching how to classify them!

Engineering Workshop:

We were lucky enough to have a special visitor who explained to us the job of a civil engineer. We then got to try different experiments involving flooding and measure how much water there was.

Spelling Stations:

We have been trying some different strategies to help us learn our spelling words. Have a look below. We enjoyed playing spelling games on Education City, multi-sensory spelling and word-search spelling! We loved it.

5c’s Visit to Bannockburn Visitor Centre

5c braved the rain to visit Bannockburn Visitor Centre to learn about the Scottish Wars of Independence.

We got to watch videos about the Battle of Bannockburn giving both sides of the argument – that of the Scottish and that of the English. This meant we got to hear a balanced argument.

Then we got to venture into the 3D battle scene where we dodged arrows and witnessed the gruesome battle scenes.

Next up, we used the various activities within the visitor centre to learn about how to fight in battle. We used this when we became Scottish and Enlgish soldiers and went into battle.

Here we are organising our Battle of Bannockburn. The Scottish soldiers were victorious today!

P5 explore China

As our China topic draws to a close, P5 shared their learning with each other.  We set them all out so that we could share these fantastic projects.

P5 have put a lot of hard work and effort into all of these projects and presentations so a huge well done to everyone! 🙂

P5d Maths fun!

To consolidate our learning about fractions, we have been using active maths games and concrete materials.

This week, we used big materials to explore equivalent fractions.  We discovered which ones were the same and recorded that information in our jotter.

This was a great visual, fun way of exploring fractions.  Well done P5d, keep up the hard work 🙂

5c’s Learning

Check out Alex’s amazing Lego Terracotta Army for his presentation on China.

We were visited by civil engineers who taught us about flood risk. We tested grass, forest, tarmac and soil to find out which would be the best at retaining water and preventing flood. To the different types of land we added 1L of water to our land to see what would happen. We noticed that the forrest / grass land absorbs the most water. Forest – 16ml, grass – 17ml, soil – 20ml, Tarmac – 30ml

We used the outdoor environment to find symmetrical shapes and then created symmetrical images of our own. Robyn, Ellie and April were very creative by creating a snow scene using twigs, pebbles, tinsel and a cone.

We began learning some Mandarin last week – the numbers 1-10. We listened to a catchy song then tried to match the numbers to the Ping Ying and then the character. It was a challenge but we managed it!

Primary 5A

First News:

P5a loved reading First News this week which will now be part of our weekly reading!

Van Gogh: Art

We have been enjoying learning about Van Gogh this week in Art! Have a look at the fantastic Starry Night pictures that we created today. We practised our techniques and then used oil pastels to create our pictures!

Sports Leaders: Football Session

We had a fantastic sports session on Monday with St Ninian’s sports leaders who played football games and taught us a range of different skills. Have a look below:

Numeracy Fun!

We loved trying out a new Numeracy game ‘Times table Rock stars”. It is a fun interactive game which is helping us to practise our multiplication and division facts!

China presentations:

We have loved hearing everyone’s presentations on China! Thank you for all of the hard work that was put in to them. Everybody did a fabulous job!

Outdoor Learning:

We consolidated the Numeracy we had been learning in class by taking our fractions work outside! Have a look below. We created improper fractions, equivalent fractions and mixed numbers!

A week to remember in P5d

Primary 5d have had another action packed week.

Engineering:

On Monday we were very lucky to have a visit from some Civil Engineers.  After learning about some projects that civil engineers carry out, we took part in an activity investigating and demonstrating ‘Flood Risk’. We had great fun!

Remembrance:

This week, especially, we remembered all those special to us who have died.  We have learned about Remembrance Day and we did some activities to show our respect for those people.

Science:

In our next topic in science, we are going to be learning about Biodiversity.  This week we discussed what a diverse range of living things we have on our planet.  We are looking forward to investigating this further.

On Tuesday, we went out to the Chestnut garden to identify some living things in our local environment. We are looking forward to learning about habitats, species and ecosystems.

Reading:

We had a very chilled out morning in the library this week. We selected a book and found a really comfortable place to unwind and read.  Keep up the rich reading P5d!

Maths:

We are really enjoying having more active fun, in class and outdoors, with our maths learning.  This week, we continued using lots of active materials as we learn about division, fractions and decimal fractions.

Well done P5d! Keep up all the fantastic work 🙂

5c Blog

Primary 5 used their detective skills to review primary and secondary evidence to decide if Guy Fawkes was guilty of attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

We have been learning about fractions this week. We applied our knowledge of fractions in the outdoor learning classroom using outdoor materials. Zara, Alisha and Valentina used chalk to draw out shapes identify the fraction they had shaded. Whilst others used twigs and grass to shade a fraction of a shape.

We went along with 5b to St Ninian’s to work with the Sports Leaders. We learned some tennis skills and had great fun working with the 6th year pupils.

Our class topic was China and we were set the task of researching a topic area which we could present. Take a look at Jessica’s billboard, Emily’s temple and some of our PowerPoint presentations.
