Week Beginning 21st January 2019

Whole School Homework – First Minister’s Reading Challenge

This week the whole school homework focuses on the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. The blue booklets were handed out in Aug/Sept and should be updated regularly. This week they will go home to be updated with any recent books completed.  These books should be returned to school by Friday.

There is also some suggestions of way to engage your child in reading out side of school.

Read, Write, Count Primary 2 bags

In November Primary 2 visited the Foundry, where they received yellow bags with 3 reading books, numeracy games and a note pad.

Please let us know what you thought by filling out the Parent survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PXCWGJ2

The prize draw for parents is a personal Read Write Count GOODIE BAG filled with books, games and activities for all the family to enjoy.

The deadline to complete this is Monday 4 March 2019.

Atrium

In the atrium this week we provided opportunities to explore natural resources as well as using sand, water and construction materials. Over the next few weeks we hope to rebuild our loose part materials collection. We will be looking for all sorts so look out for a letter for Mrs Carwood.

Physical Education

As we progress through our gymnastics focus in PE we have been working on rolls.  This week we have been working on different rolls including forward rolls.

Early Bird Club

Have you heard about St. Mark’s awesome Early Bird club?

The FREE Early Bird Club runs every morning from 8.00 am until the start of school, 8.45 am.

The Early Bird Club is a great way to start the school day, where the children have the opportunity to do a range of activities such as

  • musical instruments
  • board games
  • art materials
  • chromebooks
  • homework support (good chance to use free school Wifi)
  • physical activities, etc.

The club is completely free and open to everyone and you can even have some breakfast.

It super easy to come along, enter through the gym hall door, sign in and then join in the fun. If you would like more information contact the school office.

Week beginning 14th January 2019

This week we started our block with St. Luke’s Sports Leaders.

Whole School Homework

This week’s optional whole school homework is a creative competition. If you are interested in taking part see the link below.

Creative Competition Flyer 2019

The competition is part of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign and encourages all participants to demonstrate an anti-racism message.  If you would like to take part and require any art materials please let Miss McKay know. The school will submit the entries together and therefore they should be returned by Friday.

Living Things

Pupils have been identifying living things and sprting these into catergories of their own choice. We used our ABC of talk to discuss our ideas. Animals we find in school provided a particularly interesting debate, thankfully we were all in agreement we don’t see sharks in the playground!

John the Baptist

We were delighted to be visited by Margaret Mary on Monday. She shared the bible story of Jesus’s baptism and talked with us about John the Baptist.

Week Beginning 7th January 2019

Welcome back  to Term 2! I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break.  Check out what we will be doing this term on the P2B information page.

This week we are working on getting back into routine at school.  A new homework jotter was handed out with a new homework overview and pupils logins for Education City and Sumdog.

Pupils also have a planning sheet to talk to their families about our topics this term: Weather, Farming and Fairtrade!  When planning a topic, pupils share their knowledge and ideas to ensure we provide learning opportunities which target their interests. By discussing these at home first we will be able to have a really engaging discussion in class.

Pupils Leading Learning planning sheet

We will continue to have PE on a Wednesday and Friday and I would encourage pupils to bring their kits back in as soon as possible. Remember we love PE and don’t like to miss it, so even if it’s wet or cold we try to get outside. Therefore it’s important to have suitable outdoor clothing for PE in the MUGA on a Friday.

St. Luke’s Sports Leaders will be working with Primary 2B on Monday 14th, 21st and the 28th January.

This week we also started working on Fractions and Money.

For Golden time this week, pupils could

  • play Science Games about living and non living things on Education City
  • make and decorate crowns to mark Epiphany (6th January 2019)

Week Beginning 19th November 2018

Primary 2 have had a busy week. We were given our Sumdog passwords so we could take part in the East Renfrewshire Contest.  Sumdog can be accessed at home as well as school and focuses on numeracy skills.

We have also started learning our lines for the nativity and have been practising these.

Sticking with the maths theme, parents and pupils had the opportunity to attend our Pizza Maths night. This was the first time the event was aimed at P2-P4 pupils and we had an excellent turnout. This was an opportunity to parents to find out about the strategies we use for Numeracy. Thank you to the staff from St. Luke’s for leading this.

On Tuesday we held our first P2 showcase, this was an opportunity for pupils to share their learning with their family.  As this was our first event we took this as an opportunity to focus on the everyday experiences we complete to develop our Numeracy and Literacy.  Thank you so much to all our families who were able to attend.

Week Beginning 11th November 2018

This week at assembly we received reflective vests and snap bands from Specsavers to mark National Road Safety week. The aim of this Specsavers campaign is to increase the safety of our children when out and about by making it easier for motorists to spot them. Primary 2 have been loving wearing the vests and are being encouraged to wear them as they walk to and from school.

Week beginning 29th October 2018

Pumpkins

Over the last few weeks we have been super busy with pumpkins. We picked them from our very own school Pumpkin Patch. Then we drew sketches of the pumpkins looking at line and shape. Next we coloured the sketches using shades of orange.

After that we made delicious Pumpkin soup and toasted pumpkin seeds.  Most people tried the soup, 10 pupils said they would try the soup again.

Finally we wrote pumpkin soup instruction using bossy verbs.

PE

Pupils should participate in 2 hours of PE each week.  Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday.  On a Wednesday our PE takes place in the Gym hall. On a Friday we go outside to the Muga for PE, therefore pupils must try to bring in appropriate clothing for being outside.

Indoor kit required:

  • black plimsolls
  • black shorts
  • either a red/white/yellow t-shirt

Outdoor kit required:

  • trainers (old ones which can be kept in school)
  • black joggers
  • black fleece/sweatshirt
