Week Beginning 07.02.22

After what seemed like a lovely February weekend for all of us, we have all settled back into class and been busy from the word go! It has once again been lovely to hear what everyone spent their time doing and also sharing good news stories with each other.

Numeracy and Maths

This week we have focused on 3D Objects, Data Analysis and Symmetry. We explored different ways data can be displayed then had a go at answering questions about various types. We also sorted items into different categories using Venn Diagrams.

Literacy and English

We have had a big focus on inferencing this week and have been looking through a text for clues to support our answer. We also participated in ‘blether stations’. We had to work out what the item or object was that was being described on the card but we were only given some of the information.

In writing, we completed our last diary entry. This was based on an imaginative short film. We loved absolutely loved the film, finding it very funny and enjoyed adding description to our diary entries. Next week, we are starting a short block on comic writing which we are very excited about. We are basing our coming around the book ‘The First Hippo on the Moon’ by David Walliams. We read it in class today and there were lots of giggles!

Expressive Arts

We continued to develop our drawing skills by using chalk to create a field of colours and textures. We did lots of rubbing to blend the colours and there we some very interesting conversations around what colours made what when mixed.

Science

Many of us have shown a very keen interest in our Science topic, The Sun, Moon and Stars, even bringing in our own books from home to share. Some of the facts we have learned have amazed us and some of us have also shown a very good knowledge. We are very much looking forward to sharing our presentations next week and learning lots from each other.

Week Beginning 17.01.22

We have had a busy couple of weeks in P3b and are now fully back into the swing of things. We have been learning about Needs and Wants and have been discussing the difference between them. It really got us thinking about what we actually need to survive and we had some interesting conversations about what we want…Lamborghini’s were mentioned several times!

Literacy

We have been focusing on our comprehension skills over the past couple of weeks and have continued developing our skimming and scanning skills.  In writing, we have been writing diary entries which has taught us about writing in the first person and past tense.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been learning a variety of skills over the past couple of weeks including vertical addition and subtraction along with measurement. We have already looked at length (cm and m) and weight (g and kg) and will also be exploring capacity and volume. We also looked at multiplication and explored different ways in which we can show this. This includes repeated addition, groupings and arrays.

Expressive Arts

We are developing our drawing skills in P3b and last week focused on lines and the different types of lines we can create with a pencil. This week we used these skills to draw leaves and twigs which we found outside. We had to include the detail on the twigs and leaves in our free hand drawings which showed the many different types of lines.

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus at the moment is emotions. We are exploring different types of emotions and how these can affect us. We have also been looking at how our body reacts to certain emotions and how this can be different in people. We will also be looking at ways to overcome certain emotions.

Week Beginning 03.01.22

It has been lovely to see the children settle back into school this week and listen to them excitedly tell each other about their break as we shared news on Wednesday morning.

The highlight of the week has been playing in the snow as you will see from the pictures below.

During a wet interval some of the children created their own band named The Lightning Bolts. This has come on the back of some of the children receiving musical instruments for Christmas and Ms Biggart witnessed some excellent beat keeping. We hope you enjoy the video 🙂

Week Beginning 13.12.21

It has been a Christmas fun-filled week!  The children have continued to enjoy their book advent calendar and it really has been lovely hearing sharing each other’s favourite stories. We have also been practising our Christmas songs and a video will be uploaded at the beginning of next week onto Google Classroom. The children are very proud of the songs and came up with some little additions which I hope make you smile 🙂

Christmas Party

The highlight of the week was the Christmas party with lots of singing, dancing and party games. The children showed off some fabulous dance moves and then enjoyed a well earned snack and drink afterwards whilst watching the Snowman.

Christmas Craft

This year we made bird feeders as our Christmas craft. There was a lot of lard and bird seed but we finally achieved some beautifully shaped bird feeders which I hope you and the children will enjoy hanging in your garden.

Christmas Art

We created our own oil pastel Christmas trees. We followed instructions to create the outline of our tree and then created a pattern as our background. We used the oil pastels to add some beautiful colours, don’t they look fantastic?

Wishing all of our lovely family and friends of P3b a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🙂

Week Beginning 29.11.21

It has been an exciting week of advent calendars, including our class book advent calendar. The children have really enjoyed unwrapping a book each day and listening to each other’s favourite stories. We also chose the Christmas songs we would like to learn and will be practising them over the next couple of weeks. We will perform these in school and a video will be posted on Google Classroom for all of our family and friends to enjoy.

We also said goodbye to Miss Macrae, our student teacher. We were very sad to see her go and will miss having her in our classroom. She completed an exciting Harry Potter lesson on her last day where we made bookmarks, Dobby’s sock and some Harry Potter bunting.

Numeracy & Maths

We have continued with our number work including subtraction, sequencing and ordering numbers and identifying the missing number in a calculation. This week we also completed some Coding using Kodable. This has helped to support our understanding of Position and Direction further. We had to give our little Fuzz a clear algorithm to get it from one side of the maze to the other.

Literacy

This week we have been learning about adverbs and we created our own sentences which had to include an adverb, we also had to check it was correctly punctuated. We were also very excited to be applying for a job at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. We wrote a letter to him explaining why we would like the job and what skills we could offer.

Outdoor Learning

In the woodland, Miss Macrae tasked us with creating a hedgehog home, ensuring it was a safe place for a hedgehog to live. We completed some learning about hedgehogs before  heading outdoors and then used anything we could find in the woodland to create a cosy home.

Week Beginning 26.11.21

This week has been super busy in P3b. We received some lovely visits from other children including P6 who told us about Anti-Bullying Week and helped us write a kindness postcard. We were also joined by a pupil from P5 who received a hand written letter from Sir David Attenborough. We loved the recent video we watched of Sir David so this was very exciting indeed!

Numeracy and Maths

We continue our focus on Position and Direction and again used the BeeBots this week. We were tasked with following an algorithm and then giving the BeeBot the correct instructions to reach a certain destination on the mat. With number, we are learning to count in 10s and 100s up to 1000. Some of us are also looking at estimating and using our rounding skills to estimate an answer to a calculation. We are also trying to identify the missing number in an addition and subtraction calculation.

STEM a Story

On Monday we completed our STEM a story challenge. We read a story called ‘There’s No Dragon in this Story’ and we were then tasked with building houses for the 3 little pigs. One was made of sticks, the other from art straws and tissue paper and the last of Lego.

Literacy

We were all very intrigued to find out who we would be writing a letter too on Thursday. When we came into school that morning we found that our chairs had quit. They were tired of us swinging on them, not tucking them in or dragging them across the floor. They wrote us a letter telling us how sad they were and we were tasked with writing a letter of apology explaining how we can treat them better. We all now really appreciate our chairs in P3b.

Outdoor Learning

This week, Miss Macrae, tasked us with creating famous landscapes from natural materials found in  the woodland. Our creations were AMAZING and extremely creative!

Science

We have been learning about Food Chains with Miss Macrae. This week we created our own poster which shows three animals, one inside the other. All of these animals are in a food chain.

Week Beginning 15.11.21

We have had a lovely week celebrating Book Week Scotland. We all brought our favourite book to school and have had various opportunities to read them throughout the week. It has been lovely to share our books, discuss our favourite authors and illustrators along with completing a book review.  We also redesigned the front cover of one of the books in our Read, Write, Count bags and created character selfies. Here we all are with our favourite books along with a couple photos of us reading in class. On Monday we will complete our STEM a Story activity where we will be challenged to build 3 different houses for the little pigs.

Numeracy and Maths

This week some of us have been learning to add with 3-digits whilst others have been learning how to round. We have also been looking at the missing number in addition and subtraction calculations. On Friday’s we have a go at completing an activity from the challenge boxes. Willow and Kayla worked hard matching the 3-digit numbers to their description.

We used the BeeBots to support our learning of Directions. We made our way around different stations in the class, challenging each other to get BeeBot from one place to another on the mat plus we had a go at building a maze for BeeBot. Next week we will be following a set of instructions to see if we can get BeeBot to the correct location.

Health and Wellbeing

We have continued changing our mindset in Primary 3 and have been learning about a growth mindset. This week Miss Macrae asked us to debate if a girl can be an engineer. We split into two groups and some of us had to argue that girls can be an engineer whilst others had to argue that they can’t be. It was a very interesting conversation and this led onto us thinking about what we would like to be when we grow up and what we will need to do to achieve it. In Primary 3b there is a full team of potential footballers, some teachers, singers, artists, athletes and pilots. We even thought of an animal saver as a job for the future!

Outdoor Learning

Last week in the woodland we created our own firework show accompanied by some music. We used the leaves as the fireworks and with our group, timed the movement of the leaves with our use of the instruments. We absolutely loved making as much noise as we could which I am sure you can see from our faces. The photos below are of last weeks lesson. This week we made music with only natural materials that we could find in the woodland. There was lots of rustling of leaves, shaking of stones and banging (carefully) of trees, all with a lovely rhythm!

Week Beginning 01.11.21

P3b were full of excitement when returning to school after a weekend of Halloween celebrations. It was lovely to hear what the children dressed up as and what they did to mark the occasion with their friends and families. We have also been talking about COP26. Many of the children have showed a keen interest in the topic and we have some planned learning on this subject next week! Along with Guy Fawkes night, there has been a tremendous amount of excitement around ‘Break the Rule’ day. The children had lots of fun breaking the rules and were so keen to show each other what rules they had broken!

Numeracy

We have continued with addition and subtraction for the majority of the week. Some of the children are working on addition with carrying whilst others are continuing to develop strategies to answer horizontal calculations. We have also taken our right angle knowledge and began to use this to help create and follow sets of directions. This week we learned the vocabulary forwards, backwards, right and left. We will build on this next week and put our directions own directions into practise.

Literacy

In writing we have continued looking at poems. This has been both through our writing and also as part of comprehension for some. This week we wrote a poem about Autumn focusing on the sense. We used our time in the woodland to gather ideas to use in our poem. We also continue to practise our spelling words each week. Some of the activities we do are magnetic letters, scrabble letters, chalk pens, phoneme pebbles, active spelling cards plus a range of games such as BOOM!

Outdoor Learning

As mentioned above, we spent our time in the woodland thinking about our senses. We searched for things we can see, hear, feel and smell that make us think of Autumn. Thankfully we weren’t tasled with tasting anything! There were also many happy faces playing in the leaves!

Health and Wellbeing

This week we started a new programme of learning based around Growth Mindset. We have completed a questionnaire to provide a better understanding of our own mindset – fixed or growth. This week, Miss Macrae told us an imaginative story about a child starting school. The child had a fixed mindset and would behave in certain ways to show this. In groups, we worked together to come up with solutions to help the child.

The Vikings

We have been busy writing short stories in our busy books about the Vikings. The story could be about anything at all related to the Vikings. We then had lots of fun acting out the stories in class. We sat together and children were picked to come into the middle and pretend to be the character or object. There were lots of giggles along with learning in the class and we hope to hear some more stories in this way next week.

Week Beginning 25.10.21

Primary 3b have been full of excitement this week in the lead up to Halloween. We have completed some activities in class including spooky adjectives and then writing a short story using these adjectives along with some Halloween yoga and on Monday we made our own decorations for the classroom.

Numeracy and Maths

Many of us have been working on calculations. Some of us are focusing on horizontal calculations and have been using strategies such as counting on or back and partitioning to help us calculate the answer. Others have been learning about vertical calculations and have been focusing on laying out the calculation, ensuring our tens and units are lined up. We also started a new concept in class and over the next six weeks we will be learning about position and direction. This week we learned about right angles and we now understand that a right angle is the same as a quarter turn. We went on a right angle hunt around the classroom.

Literacy

This week we wrote our Autumn poems. We used some of the things we found in the woodland as prompts to help support our writing. We included some alliteration in our poem and had lots of fun trying to say ‘Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers’. Mrs Agnew thinks our poems are amazing and next week we are going to redraft them onto templates. We also completed a listening activity. Mrs Agnew read us a set of instructions related to a picture of a skeleton and we had to complete the picture according to the instruction.

Expressive Arts

We completed some Halloween art by creating a spooky picture with a silhouette.  We were given white and blue paint and had to gradually mix the blue paint into the white to get the effect of the moon. We then created a silhouette of a castle, haunted house or any other spooky image and glued this onto the painting. Our images look great and we can’t wait to share them with you soon.

Outdoor Learning

Our time in the woodland was very wet this week which impacted on the lesson planned. We still went out in the rain and had lots of fun as you will see from the photos below.

Week Beginning 18.10.21

It was lovely to see the children returning from their October break so happy and excited to share what they did with their families and friends during their time off. We spent some time on Tuesday listening to each other share holidays, day trips and exciting things happening at home.

Numeracy and Maths

In Numeracy and Maths we have continued with concepts previously learned. Some of us created our own calculations and challenged our partner to answer them correctly. We completed our work on money and have shown we can calculate amounts up to £10. We can calculate change within £1 and have been using strategies to help us do this.

Literacy

In Literacy we continued our focus on nouns and have been looking at the difference between common and proper nouns. We are working really hard to develop our handwriting skills and looking at our letter formation.

Outdoor Learning

Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking at Autumn which will also support our writing in class. During our time in the woodland we collected lots of things that remind us of Autumn. This included leaves which had changed colour, logs, fallen apples and even a piece of pumpkin. We discussed the colours and textures of the items and also why the reminded us of Autumn. Some of us  spotted different types of fungus on the trees including some jelly fungus, amazingly this was also growing on the tyres!

We then had some free time to explore the woodland. Some of us started an imaginary game, the Vikings vs the Romans. We had a tug of war which quickly developed into a full class tug of war.

The Vikings

This week we have been learning about Viking longships. We looked at the unique design of the ships and watched a short video which gave us an insight into how the Vikings used and operated their ships. In pairs or groups, we have started to create our own design. We have all given our Viking longships a name and some of us are even adding our own inventions to our design.
