Maths & Numeracy

‘Mathematics plays an important role in areas such as science or technologies, and is vital to research and development in fields such as engineering, computing science, medicine and finance. Learning mathematics gives children and young people access to the wider curriculum and the opportunity to pursue further studies and interests.’ (Mathematics: Principles and Practice, 2009)

In Thornliebank Primary School and ELCC, we strive to develop pupils’ undestanding of all mathematical concepts and their relevance to life outside the classroom.  The numeracy and maths curriculum is organised under three headings:

  • Number, Money and Measure
  • Shape, Position and Movement
  • Information Handling

As part of our daily curriculum, we facilitate opportunities to develop mental agility through a variety of games and interactive mental maths sessions. We also facilitate opportunities for children to develop their logical reasoning and creative thinking through a variety of learning experiences. Because learners are required to pull on a rage of skills and apply these to different contexts, pupils are able to enjoy a sense of achievement and success in maths.
