Literacy & English

Our Literacy and English programmes and courses cover:

Listening and Talking
Reading
Writing

At St John’s we use a wide range of resources to teach reading.  In the infant department our core resource is Storyworld, these book will be sent home as part of your childs’ homework programme.  In the middle and upper school Literacy World is our core resource.  For homework pupils in the middle and upper stages have home reading books and class novels.

Jolly Phonics and Nelson Spelling are used to teach spelling throughout the school.  We promote active spelling strategies and use these for homework.

Throughout their time at St John’s your child will develop a range of writing skills, these skills are taught weekly with pupils writing imaginative stories, poetry, reports, recounts, letter and more.  These writing skills are then developed in a variety of real life situations e.g. writing a letter to invite a visitor into school.
