Engineering the Future for Girls @ the University of Strathclyde

Engineering the Future for Girls @ the University of Strathclyde

19th-23rd June 2017

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is launching a one week Summer School for S3 girls (entering S4 in June).

Engineering the Future for Girls is being delivered in collaboration with BP and BAM Nuttall and is designed to engage girls in a wide range of engineering challenges that will inspire them to become the next generation of engineers. The summer school is fully-funded by BP and BAM Nuttall and all student costs, including travel, will be covered. Strathclyde will accept applications from girls with any range of subject choices at National 5.

The summer school is non-residential and therefore pupils should be able to make their way each day to the University of Strathclyde campus in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. Teachers are not required to accompany pupils during the week. For the pupils’ convenience, we have arranged for Mentors to accompany pupils from and to Queen Street train station, Glasgow Central train station and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day.

Pupils should apply at http://www.strath.ac.uk/engineering/outreach/engineeringthefutureforgirls using the online application form. The deadline for applications is 10 March 2017. A confirmation email is sent upon receipt of application. The selection panel will meet in late March/early April to review the applications received and all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by 7 April 2017. An automated email is sent to teachers informing them of the application submitted and requesting a supporting statement. The supporting statement for each student should be submitted online using a designated link by 17 March 2017, for the application to be considered.

If you would like any further information on the Summer School then please email: engineeringthefutureforgirls@strath.ac.uk

Visit to Heron Bros Site

A group of S5 pupils visited the Heron Bros Faith School Joint Campus site on Waterfoot Road to see the new school being built and to learn more about construction and engineering.  Thank you to Heron Bros staff for being so welcoming and informative.  The pupils learned a great deal about the whole construction process and are looking forward to another visit in a few months to see how the building has developed.

Developing the Young Workforce Career Evening – S2 and S4 pupils

There will be an exciting opportunity for S2 and S4 pupils to attend a Developing the Young Workforce Career Evening on Thursday 24th November starting at 6.30pm.  We have invited a wide range of speakers from different jobs to speak to the pupils about their career pathways and to give pupils an insight into their jobs.  This will help pupils as they make their options choices later this session and make decisions about their own future career choices.  Further information will be given at assemblies this week and letters will be issued with information about how to sign up for this event by the end of the week.    Keep the evening free!

Interested in a career in journalism or the media?

We have a fantastic opportunity for a group of 15-20 senior pupils who are interested in a career in journalism or the media, or who are simply interested in developing their writing skills. Deborah McInnes from the ‘Student Rag’ magazine would like to work with a group of pupils to create a ‘Leavers’ magazine for East Renfrewshire.  Pupils will work together to produce and publish a magazine aimed at pupils leaving school.  There will be an opportunity to produce articles on a range of topics, be given feedback on your writing from a highly experienced editor and gain experience of working in this type of career.  This is an excellent opportunity to enhance your CV, widen the content of college and university applications and get your work published!

There is an initial meeting in the Conference Room at 12.20 on Friday 2nd September.  Please give your name to Miss McLachlan in Support for Learning if you are interested in being involved or would like to find out more.
