Some parent’s have asked how many family members are allowed to attend tonight. We have use of IMS MOD (gym hall) tonight therefore we are not required to place a limit on numbers attending.

Bookbug Week

Bookbug Week has got off to a fantastic start!

Hugh Graham from Family Support Services stopped in on Monday and Tuesday to help us launch our Bookbug Sessions and what a launch it was. The children enjoyed the variety of songs, rhymes, games and the story during the session.

Thank you to all parent’s and carers who have stayed and particpated so far…..if you have not yet joined us for a Bookbug session; don’t worry! There is still plenty of time!

Wednesday: Baby Bookbug at 9am and 1pm led by Johanne March (CDO)

Thursday: Toddler Bookbug at 9am led by Donna Quaile (Depute Head) and 1pm led by Laura Darroch (PSA)

also on Thursday Donna will be leading literacy information sessions talking about Bookbug and the Hanen programme and sharing tips with parents.

We are also offering ‘Bookbug in the Home Sessions’ on Wedneday and Thursday…….the home session slots are filling up fast so if you would like us to visit and bring Bookbug to you – come and speak to us as soon as you can!

Children’s Weekly Workout

All parents should by now be receiving their weekly What’s Happening Email Bulletin.

This bulletin has proved to be a great success in terms of communication and this was reflected recently in our parental questionnaires.  (*Feedback from the questionnaires is currently being collated – we will share the outcome of this and alert you to any ‘action points’ the family centre need to address.)

The weekly parent email not only informs parents and carers of the events for the forthcoming week, but also gives parents an idea on some ‘workouts’ and/or ‘talking tips’ to carry out at home.

The workouts and talking tips stem from staff’s knowledge of child development and we think about each of the workouts and talking tips in terms of how we can best support children’s continued development in all areas of the curriculum.

Even the simplest colouring in task (last week’s workout!) is helping support child development in a number of areas for example:

 Fine  motor development

  • hand – eye coordination
  • hand skills
  • pencil grasp
  • control of pencil/implement
  • securing preferred hand
  • development of pencil control leads to better control when forming letters/numbers
  • awareness of matching, naming, sorting colours
  • perseverance in task – even when tricky i.e. staying in the lines
  • Maintaining attention skills
  • Increased focus
  • Completion of task through to end
  • Following instructions
  • Increasing confidence on completion and handing in to staff member
  • Celebrating success when praised after completion
  • Sense of achievement at having work displayed on wall

 The list is endless……………

I wonder what next weeks workout will be!?

Holiday Reminder

Parents are kindly reminded the Family Centre will be closed on Monday 5th May 2014 as this day is a public holiday. Children should return at the usual times on Tuesday 6th May.

In addition, the Family Centre will be closed for the May Weekend on Friday 23rd and Monday 26th May 2014. Tuesday 27th May is an In-Service Training Day – therefore children should return to the family centre on Wednesday 28th May.

 Many Thanks.

Enterprise Day

As you will know, the children will be hosting an  Enterprise Day on Friday 2nd May.

We ask that all parents/carers come along to support this event. The children have put a great deal of time and effort into their artwork and they are continuing to learn about art and a variety of artists.

Please pop along to the family centre at a time that suits you. Staff and children will be available throughout the day to escort you along to our ‘Gallery’ – you can have a look at the children’s art work and perhaps purchase your own child’s piece of art!

Stay for a cup of tea, coffee or juice and have a chat!

We look forward to seeing you there.
