Care Inspectorate Report 2017

We are delighted to let you know that our most recent Care Inspectorate Report has now been published.

The Care Inspectorate arrived at the Family Centre on 29th September to carry out an unannounced inspection.

For this inspection, the Inspector assessed two areas – the quality of care and support and the quality of the environment.

We were delighted that both of the inspected areas were graded as a ‘6’ and ‘Excellent’.

Tesco Bags of Help Grant News!

Tesco supermarket teamed up with Green Space Scotland to launch it’s Bags of Help initiative which saw grants awarded to local projects – all raised from the 5p carrier bag charge.

Isobel Mair Family Centre submitted an application to the Tesco Bags of Help grant scheme in December and we were thrilled to discover we had been nominated for an award.

This week we can share the tremendous news that we have been awarded……….

£8000!!

We are just thrilled to have been chosen by Tesco customers to receive such an amazing amount of money which will be spent on making improvements to our outdoor learning space.

Many ideas were generated for the application and we are hoping to take these ideas forward. The children are all on board with ideas for their space and we would like parent’s to have a say too.

We have spoken with some parent’s who have ‘registered an interest’ in joining a working party to help move forward with our ambitious plans for upgrading the outdoor environment. Please let your child’s key worker know if you are interested in joining the group.

Thank you to everybody who voted for us!

Some parent’s have asked how many family members are allowed to attend tonight. We have use of IMS MOD (gym hall) tonight therefore we are not required to place a limit on numbers attending.

We look forward to seeing you tonight and joining you in celebrating your child’s achievements.

Mini Kickers

Our Sports Coordinator will be visiting the Family Centre every Wednesday for the next 4 weeks (starting on Wednesday 15th January)  to give all children a block of Mini Kickers taster session.

Please ensure your child has the appropriate clothing on this day as we will be outdoors.

I am sure the children will enjoy this experience….here are a few photographs from the first Mini Kickers session on Wednesday 8th January……

Supporting Literacy Development at IMFC

All playrooms across Isobel Mair Family Centre are literacy rich environments for our children.

Staff in our Cara playroom have been promoting children’s early literacy skills through introducing  a ‘Story of the Week’ and using our new storytelling tent. Children have been supported to create a Learning Wall to demonstrate and evidence their learning  about the language of books i.e. title, author, illustrator, blurb, spine. Please feel free to take a look and add your comments to the wall.

In Balta and Texa playrooms children enjoy accessing a variety of interactive story telling methods. Puppets, ICT, sensory touch and sound producing books are all used to help support children’s engagement in literacy. Speak to staff about their story telling skills!

You may have noticed our Bookbug display in the Family Centre corridor. Some of our staff are Bookbug trained and these fun and interactive rhyme and storytelling sessions are carried out within the Family Centre. Some children may benefit from Bookbug in the home sessions. This is a new venture for IMFC as we are currently in the process of  ‘rolling out’ our Bookbug in the Home project. Please speak to Mrs. Quaile or Mrs. Todd if you feel your child would benefit from this aspect of our service.

You can support you child in their literacy development in a number of ways. Please speak to staff if you require more information.

Here are some useful points of information:

  • Enjoying stories in any format – narrated or signed – helps children learn how to concentrate.
  • Storytelling helps physical development. Turning the pages of a book, navigating a website using a mouse or keyboard, and via touch on a mobile device like an iPad or an iPhone, develops motor skills.
  • Exploring images and ideas develops our imagination and our senses – sight, touch, smell and sound – and helps us learn conversational skills, like turn-taking.
  • Reading helps to introduce children to the structure and vocabulary of language – written, spoken and in sign language
  • Stories help develop emotional intelligence and picture books will help children to find meaning within their own life. Children can pore over emotional situations contained within books that may help to relieve personal frustrations. They can encounter exciting and imaginative experiences far beyond their own environment or even their dreams.
  • Storytelling is a great shared experience, helping children bond with their siblings, their friends and family, and their teachers and carers.
  • The confidence to communicate helps reduce the social isolation experienced by many deaf children and those with special educational needs.

IMFC Yorkhill & Brightest Star Charity Fundraising ‘Superheroes Party Day’

All children are invited to dress up as their favourite Super Hero for our themed end of term party on Tuesday 25th June.

Please bring your pre-school child to the Family Centre entrance where they will be met by staff. Parent’s will be escorted along to IMS MOD to take their seats.

Sponsorship for Brightest Star and Yorkhill Children’s Charity

Please take time to have a look at the Sponsorship wall just through the double doors of the foyer.

Brightest Star and Yorkhill Charity Fundraisers

To support the above charities staff have planned two very special events.

The first event at Isobel Mair Family Centre will be a ‘Super Hero’ themed party day on the Tuesday 25th June.

The Brightest Star charity was founded in memory of Jack Kennedy. Jack was a local child who loved Super Heroes, in particular ‘The Hulk.’ On this day we ask that all children come to our themed party dressed as their favourite Super Hero, bringing a donation for Jack’s charity. For more information on Jack’s charity please go to: www.brighteststar.org.uk

The second event is a sponsored event and we ask for your support in this. Staff will be travelling to Aberfoyle on Saturday 20th July to ‘Go Ape’ where they will be swinging through the treetops in terror!

The money we raise will go to both Brightest Star and Yorkhill Children’s Charity.

I’m sure you will wish the staff well in their venture and we hope you will help us raise as much money as possible for charities close to our hearts.
