Our thanks to everyone who has contributed to our annual Christmas Can Appeal. All donations are being passed to the Barrhead Foodbank to be distributed to those in need in our local community at what can be a particularly difficult time for many families.

Supported Study Dates for January 2014 are now available (here).
These sessions are open to all senior students studying at the level indicated next to the session.
We strongly recommend that you attend these sessions in order to improve your chances of achieving the best possible results in the exams in May 2014.
Please add as many sessions to your calendar as you can. All sessions start immediately after school on the day indicated.
Students were given a letter home yesterday explaining the arrangements for the remainder of this term.

On Saturday the 30th of November Barrhead High senior pupils took part in The East Renfrewshire Mini Trials held in the Paisley Sheriff court.
The pupils had prepared two cases thoroughly and were excited about the prospect of ‘competing’ against other East Renfrewshire schools in open court.
The day was split into two halves: the morning was spent in court dramatically reproducing an assault case, while the afternoon was spent re-enacting a civil case involving a snail and a ginger beer company! Needless to say, Barrhead High School’s top lawyers and witnesses achieved a positive result in both of the cases, persuading the jurors of the strength of their cases.
At the end of the day the pupils were awarded certificates of participation from The Dean of The Faculty of Advocates who expressed his delight at the quality of the arguments prepared by the teams involved. Barrhead’s own coach, lawyer Gordon Ritchie had this to say: “Please pass on my congratulations to your pupils who excelled at this years event. The lawyers were confident and assured and asked relevant and pertinent questions, and I was particularly impressed by the two speeches. The witnesses also gave great performances and all the pupils were a credit to their school.”
It is great to see the pupils at Barrhead High school excelling in public speaking, particularly when so many teachers promote this as a key skill in their classrooms as part of the curriculum for excellence.
Well done all of those who took part.

The Rotary Club Public Speaking Competition is one of the most sought after titles in the competitive calendar for East Renfrewshire schools. This year’s team from Barrhead High School (Ciara Morton, Alice McNair and Olivia Ross) were fierce contenders as they took to the stage at St Luke’s High School to discuss “The Plight of Women”. This impassioned speech was delivered by Alice McNair who was confident in her delivery and held her audience’s attention with ease. Alice spoke eloquently and wowed her listeners with her original view on feminism: describing how it does more to contribute to rather than eradicate inequality. Alice was supported by her chairperson, Ciara Morton, who explained the reasoning behind Alice’s point of view and by Olivia Ross who delivered the Vote of Thanks.
The team worked well together and produced a high quality piece of work and delivered it with style and flair, much to the enjoyment of the audience. The girls were able to answer a question from Jim Murphy MP and held their own; remaining sure and steadfast to their principles.
The girls represented the school well and are thankful for the support they received; they especially wanted to thank Mrs Richardson (Principal Teacher of English) for her unwavering support and for the members of staff who gave up their lunchtime to support the girls and hear them rehearse. The support they received has allowed the girls to build their confidence and they believe they have benefitted from their experience.
Despite the fact that the girls did not win the competition, they are heartened by the feedback they received from both pupils and staff of other schools. The girls delivered an enthralling speech which was widely considered by most of the audience to be one of the front runners for the title. Well Done!
Barrhead High School is the first school to take to the streets since the Implementation of the Clean up Scotland / East Renfrewshire launch 1 November 2013. The litter pick took place in the surrounding areas of Barrhead. Afterwards the pupils signed a pledge to help keep our local streets free of litter.

Kew Garden Grow Wild Project – We Won!
This will bring £100,000 to see the old waterworks transformed into a wild flower garden area, which will be a tremendous boost to the local community and the town of Barrhead.
Thank you to everyone who voted for Barrhead Water Works Project. This is a fabulous achievement not only for the school but for our local community.
We hope work on creating the wild flower garden on the site will start soon and pupils from the school will be involved. We will keep you posted on progress.

Well done to Ailish Douglas who recently competed in her first national synchronised swimming event. Ailish swam with the Clydebank Team to a Beatles medley. The team won silver in the Scottish section. Ailish joined the Clydebank Team this August and still continues with the Ren96 team – she trains 3-4 times a week.
