S2 Pathways Information Meeting

A reminder to all S2 Parents & Carers:

Our S2 Pathways Information Meeting takes place on Tuesday, 3rd March 2020 from 7pm.

Information will be provided on the options available to S2 pupils as they prepare to choose their subjects for S3.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 3rd March.

Lost Property – going … going … gone!

We have a significant quantity of lost property and too much now to store or keep any longer. We are planning to highlight this over the next week and anything unclaimed by the end of the week will be passed on for charity / clothes bank.

The items will be put out on display in the Reprographics Room this week. Pupils can check it out  by calling at the School Office and they will be directed to it. Any parent who wishes to look for particular items  is welcome to come into school and report to the School Office.

Hopefully some lost items will be reunited with their owners but if not, at least they will go somewhere useful.

Severe Weather Procedures

All pupils have now been issued with a letter detailing the procedures we would follow if the school had to be closed during the day.

In summary, we would text all ‘main contact’  parents to inform them of the planned closure and then operate a controlled dismissal where:

  • S1/2 pupils will only be allowed to leave once we have heard from parents on the day;
  • S3/4 pupils may be allowed to leave if parents have given consent in advance – otherwise we would require to hear on the day;
  • S5/6 pupils will be allowed to leave school unless you have told us otherwise.

See the letter for further details.

For pupils in S1, S2, S5 & S6, we only require a return of the tear-off slip if you require to give a new mobile number.

Pupils in S3 & S4 whose parent are giving consent in advance, require to return the slip.

Scottish National Standardised Assessments – S3 Pupils

Over the next 2 weeks, our S3 pupils will sit the new Scottish National Standardised Assessments (SNSA). These are the new assessments introduced by the Scottish Government as part of their National Improvement Framework strategy and all S3 pupils across Scotland will sit these for the first time this session (as will all P1, P4 and P7 pupils).
There are 3 assessments – reading, writing and numeracy – which are taken online. In Barrhead High School, our pupils will take the literacy assessments during the first week and the numeracy the following week.

These are not assessments that require particular preparation or studying on the part of the pupils but we do want them to do their best.
If you want further information, please see the pdf file below, or go directly onto the government’s SNSA website.

S5/6 PRELIMS

The S5/6 Prelim Examinations start on Monday the 5th of February.

A copy of the timetable can be accessed using the link below.

All of our students need to be familiar with the day and time of their exams.

All pupils have been handed a paper copy of the timetable. Pupils with additional support requirements will be issued with a separate personalised timetable from the support department.

If you would like extra advice on studying and dealing with exam stress then visit the SQA study guides section of their website (link below).

Barrhead High School Official Opening

Representatives of pupils, parents and staff joined with East Renfrewshire councillors and officials as well as some of the partners who were involved in building the new school, for the official opening earlier today.

Provost Jim Fletcher welcomed everyone to the new school before a very powerful video showing life in the new school, created by our multimedia technician Matthew Mathieson, was played. It can be seen at the link below and is already on the East Renfrewshire Facebook site with some photos and videos (check also the Parent Council Facebook page and Twitter for more).

Councillor Tony Buchanan then made the closing remarks before the band played us out with ‘Best Years of Our Lives’ and our own catering staff provided an excellent buffet for the guests.

It was an appropriate and meaningful way to ‘officially’ welcome in the new school and all present spoke very highly of the whole event.

Showcase Event – Wed 22nd Nov

Parents of pupils in S1 & S2, as well as parents of pupils in P6 & P7 in our associated primary schools, have been invited to come in to school to see what school life is like for their young people in the new school.

The evening will commence at 7 pm in the Games Hall. From there parents will go in groups to 3 different areas of the school to get a taste of school life and find out what pupils are doing in the classroom. Everybody will then return to the Games Hall and some of our ‘PE’ pupils will entertain us.

During the evening, there will also be musical contributions and displays showing other aspects of school life.

I look forward to meeting you on the evening.

I have attached below a link to the usual summary of our Important Dates for this session, which I hope will be of use to all parents. We will also add a quick link at the left side of the website that will take you straight to it.

I have also attached a link to another sheet which summarises some of the additional sessions we are offering to support parents in helping their young people. This includes our usual information sessions regarding pathways (options) at key stages. It also includes a number of other sessions which we hope parents will find to be useful.

This information will also be sent out as a paper copy via schoolbag-mail over the next few days.
