Debating Society

On Saturday the 25th of March our S6 pupils, Daniel Cunningham and Richard Halligan, braved the snow and cold winter weather to take part in the semi finals of the ESU Mace Competition held at Fettes College in Edinburgh. They debated with great skill against the need to have trial by jury and received extremely positive feedback on their performance.

Although not successful in getting through to the final, we want to congratulate them for reaching such a high stage of a very tough competition, for their hard work and dedication and for continuously receiving high praises from both judges and audiences.

We hope that this will be the start of their successful debating career and that many others will follow in their footsteps!

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

Well done to seventeen Barrhead High students who completed their Duke of Edinburgh Award – Practice Expedition at Whitelees Windfarm this week.  The weather was abysmal, but the attitude, behaviour and effort of the students was first class!  Well done to all involved and here’s hoping the assessed expedition in June 2013 has more favourable weather!!

Senior Boys Basketball Win

Barrhead High’s senior boy’s basketball team have reached the semi-finals of the Renfrewshire and East Schools’ cup after defeating St Andrews Academy 52 – 69.

In a thrilling quarter-final match, away to St Andrew’s, Barrhead took an early lead in the 1st quarter (17 – 24) thanks in the main to Stewart Booth and Jon Faulds scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.  Barrhead extended their lead in the 2nd quarter with some excellent interplay.  Fraser Black also contributed with two, 3-pointers.  By the halfway point Barrhead lead 29-39.

Into the third quarter and the boys upped their game again scoring 19 points in total, and at the same time restricted the opposition to 9 points.  As Barrhead started the 4th quarter, they lead the game 38 – 58.  St Andrew’s then began to produce some of their best basketball scoring 14 points this quarter.  With a commanding lead, Barrhead were content to hold on to the ball when in offense, although Scott MacCuish scoring three consecutive baskets, ensured Barrhead maintained their lead.

Other unsung heroes included Max Curran who rebounded well at both ends of the court, Stuart Faulds who defended well against older and more experienced players and Colin Redmond for his rebounding and ridiculous looking headband.

Barrhead now meet Williamwood H.S. in the semi-final.  Well done boys!

Boys Under 14 Football

The school under 14 football team beat Eastwood 5 – 4 in a thrilling game at Eastwood’s new astroturf pitch. Barrhead came back from 2 – 0 and 3 – 2 down, to lead 5 – 3, before Eastwood pulled one back in the last minute. David Mundemba scored a hat trick, with one from the penalty spot. The other goals were scored by Connor Davidson and Steven Pringle.
